You probably knew Maki Serkahn, even if you didn’t know his name. He was “the hat guy” to many; often wearing distinctive headgear of bright colors and intricate designs.

You may have seen him in Moose Lake having coffee in Joe Jitters with “my Bride” or his mother-in-law, Jo. Maybe you saw him at the local auction, poking into boxes and chatting with everyone in attendance. Maybe it was in a store in Cloquet or Hermantown where he was running errands and catching up with everyone.

When Maki asked “how are you?” he always wanted the long answer. He would listen to you with his whole attention. He just listened, not offering platitudes or advice. He made you feel visible and heard.

Perhaps you ran into Maki at the Carlton County Fair. He would be inside the CCHS cabin and barn, stringing a tale of life without electricity or running water. He spoke from experience, embellished with local history, and told the stories with a twinkle in his blue eyes and a joke to get you laughing.

Maki knew nearly every clerk in every store he visited. He knew their names and, often, their stories. His caring extended to everyone he met.

Did you need some help? Maki was ready to give you a ride, help you move, or loan you his services in any way he could. Would a hug help? Maki freely gave hugs to whomever wanted them. He would remind you to lean to the right, so you are heart-to-heart.

His was an unconditional love. Be inspired. Pass it on. Offer a smile or a hug to someone today and every day.

A service will be on Wednesday February 4, 2026 at 1pm at Hamlin Hansen Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake with a Visitation one hour prior.
