As kids, we lived in the same neighborhood in Nogales Az. I remember him as being a very kind soul. So sad to hear about his passing. He will be remembered as a very good natured, warm person.

Pa dancing on the streets of gold. May he rest in peace in the arms of our Lord and savior My condolences to the family, I love you all.

MANUEL's Obituary

Manuel “Pops” Cota, age 73, passed away peacefully on New Years Day 2026, surrounded by his wife and children, after a courageous eight years battling cancer. Pops was born in Douglas, AZ on July 26, 1952 to Phillip G. Cota and Albertina (Araiza) Cota. He graduated from Nogales High school in 1970, earning letters in varsity football and baseball, and spent some time at Northern Arizona University. Pops served as a Sheriff’s Deputy with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s office for over 35 years, before retiring as a lieutenant. He was a strong loving father, and was a fun, gentle and loving presence to his grandchildren. His memory is treasured by his wife of 42 years Maria Elena (Del Rio) Cota; sister Adela Cota, sister MaryAnn Cota; four children, Manny Cota Jr and wife Kendra Cota, Fernando Cota and wife Victoria Cota, Erik Cota and wife Breanna Cota, Damaris Cota; and five grandchildren.

 

Pops loved spending time with family and friends, eating good food and being around his grandkids. He valued his community of friends in Nogales, notably the men’s breakfast group at First Baptist Church-Nogales, and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). He enjoyed serving at church and mentoring young men and women entering law-enforcement and military service. He loved classic movies, classic rock music, and family gatherings. 

 

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday January 31, 2026 at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church-Nogales, located at 1916 N. Frank Reed Rd, Nogales, AZ 85621.
