Maria Paz Covarrubias passed away on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025, at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her 8 children, 19 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 siblings. In passing, she joins her husband Joaquin Covarrubias, daughter Angelica Covarrubias, sons-in-law Eleazer Sandoval and Cruz Sanchez Jr, brothers Manuel and Juan, and sister Piedad.
Born in Los Amoles, Mexico, Maria migrated to the United States with six children to join her husband in seeking life-saving medical treatment for her son. She was a devoted mother who worked hard to maintain a comfortable home for her family while simultaneously working full time as a produce picker throughout South Bay. She retired at age 66 after working for Monterey Mushrooms for 37 years.
Maria Paz was known for her dedication to the well-being of her family and loved ones. She was a powerful presence who was always ready to share whatever she had while playfully teasing you at the same time. She loved the life that she created and shared with her husband, and nothing made her happier than hosting her entire family at Grandma’s house. She couldn’t pass up a good deal, despised wasting food, and wasn’t afraid to give her honest opinion whether solicited or not. As a mother, grandmother, sister, and loving comadre, she will be missed dearly by all who experienced her joy and care.
Viewing and Vigil Service will be held at Habing Family Funeral home in Gilroy on Wednesday, August 27th at 5:30pm. Funeral Mass will proceed at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on Thursday, August 28th at 10:00am, with burial to follow.
