Margie was a brave, strong women. She fought through many illnesses. She prayed, or as she said, talked, to Jesus a lot which brought her comfort. She loved her family fiercely. Her last words to me were "I love you Sissy".

Marie was our babysitter, when my brother and I were little, and we absolutely adored her! We would call her "Marjie in the garbage", and we'd laugh and laugh...we loved her so!

Date of Death ~ June 12, 2022
Age ~ 73
Marjorie “Margie” Gechas passed away on June 12, 2022, at Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital.
Margie was born December 13, 1948, to Clifford “Bud” and Zada Smith, the sixth of seven children.
Margie attended Rhinelander area grade schools and graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1967. One of the highlights of her high school years was competing in the Miss Rhinelander Pageant. She always cherished those memories.
She married Joseph C. Gechas on May 18, 1968. Together they raised six children. Their love was true, and they enjoyed almost fifty-four years together before Joe’s passing on June 4, 2021.
Margie worked for many years in food service as a waitress and a cook. She was a bartender and managed The Desperados Bar in Sugar Camp for a few years. She then found a new vocation in Home Health Care and was well liked by her clients and their families.
Margie loved gardening and her flowers. Every spring and summer her yard was a grand display of planted flowers and hanging baskets. If you visited her, you had to guess how many she had and a correct guess got you a prize. Along with her flowers, she loved butterflies. They decorated her home both inside and out.
Margie, her husband Joe and their children spent countless hours fishing, camping and hunting. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her six children; Amie Santini of MN, Doreen (Jack) Bailey of Rhinelander, Joe (Michelle) Gechas of Rhinelander, Jim Gechas of Rhinelander, Andrew (Joanna) Gechas of MN and Trisha (Jason) Zunk of Rhinelander. Eight grandchildren; Nicole (Harley) Spencer, Deanna Gechas (Jacob Clark), Jacob Bailey, Abbie Gechas, Jasper Gechas, Jude Zunk, Elena Zunk and Lukas Zunk. One great-grandson; Cayden Gechas, two sisters; Alice Simmons and Patricia Raske, both of Rhinelander, her lifelong and best friend; Billie Koenig of Rhinelander and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Margie is preceded in death by her husband; Joseph C. Gechas, her parents; Clifford “Bud” and Zada Smith, her sisters; Lillian O’Brien and Delores Westman, her brothers; Clifford “Jim” Smith and Richard Smith.
A graveside service will be held at the Newbold Cemetery at a later date.
