Marlene June Martin, 91, of Eagle Mountain, Utah, formerly of Mayville, New York, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on August 17, 2025.
She was born June 26, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Claus “Martin” and Signe Elmer. Her early years were filled with blissful memories of playing with friends, strawberry jam on toast, her mother’s avid baking, and time spent with her sister, Carol, and many cousins.
In 1957, Marlene married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Martin, whom she met in high school and called “the person she enjoyed being with the most.” She went on to complete a degree in English literature from the University of Minnesota, and then with three children under the age of 6 and nine months pregnant with her fourth—earn a master’s in Speech and Hearing from Northern Illinois University (DeKalb).
In 1968, the Martin family moved to Jamestown, New York, where Marlene worked as a speech therapist for the Jamestown School District. The family later settled in Mayville, where they owned and operated the Red Brick Farm. Marlene flourished as a civic-minded leader, serving on the Chautauqua School Board, the Mayville Zoning Board, as president of Eta Nu (Beta Sigma Phi) service sorority, and as Director of Religious Education at St. Mary’s Church.
Marlene was deeply devoted to her family and faith. She said she wished to be remembered “as someone who loved deeply—my family, my faith, and the life I was given.” Christmas was never complete without her Swedish rendition of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas.
She loved to travel—spending three months after college exploring Europe; taking fun trips with Bob to Europe, North Africa, Mexico, and around the U.S.; and later making several pilgrimages to Medjugorje with her local church.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bob Martin; her sister, Carol Streif; and great-grandson, Skyler Larson (Stephen & Dee). She is survived by 4 children – Jeff (Lynn Anderson), Kris (Mike Larson), Steve (Wenda Bert), and Dave (Lisa Rand); 14 grandchildren – Jeff & Lynn: Casey (Vincent DeMarco), Curtis (Erica); Kris & Mike: Jessica (Jared Berensen), Stephen (Dee), Spencer (Brittany), Benjamin, Annika, David; Steve & Wenda: Riley (Tanner Rima), Dylan, Lauryn; Dave: Natalie, Carly, Wes/Hannah; 13 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Donna Martin; and a loving extended family of nieces and nephews, along with grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
A viewing and memorial service will be held at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home in Orem, Utah, from 6:00–7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2025, for local friends and family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Mayville, New York, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish to honor Marlene, do something she loved: sing, take a walk in the woods, share a slice of pie, read a poem, or listen to some classical piano music—she would be delighted to be remembered that way.
