Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthian 3:16-18
On Monday morning, March 31, 2025, God called our beloved Sister Mary Chapman to her eternal rest. As an independent and faithful woman of God and to her family, she lived a life full of grace and mercy trying to be a good godly example of a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother to her family.
Born on September 3, 1940 in Suffolk, Virginia to the late James A. and Sallie B. Graves. During her early years, after her daddy passed, and being the older girl of 10 siblings she cared for her younger siblings while her mother worked. She was the third of ten children. She learned how to care for a family when she was very young. She attended Isle Wight Training School in Smithfield, VA and started working at the age 14. She continued working until she married Columbus C. Chapman (CC) in 1960. She went with her husband to Germany in the military. To their union three children were born: Karen, Janet, and Carl.
After returning from Germany, Mary and CC moved back to Carrollton, VA and raised their children, attended Rising Star Baptist Church and later went to Six Mount Zion Baptist Church where Mary served faithful with her husband until he passed away in 2015. She continued her godly fellowship at p. She served God in a personal way and she thought everyone should have a saving knowledge of God to conduct themselves in a right relationship with Him and His people. She thought everybody should always be good to one another. Mary was a charitable person. She loved to cook and can food and give to those who visited her. Mary got a job and worked at the Smithfield Packing Company until she retired. After retiring from the packing company, she begins to work as a caregiver until her health begins to be a challenge to her.
Mary sold her house in Carrollton, VA and lived with her daughters until she transited this life. She is preceded in death by her husband CC, two brothers: Alvester and James B; three sisters: Nancy, Alice, and Beulah. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters Karen Davis, Janet Chapman, a son, Carl Chapman, two Sisters Tessie Batten and Paulette Cypress (Frissell), two Brothers Morris Graves (Sheri) and Oried Graves (Edna), six grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Mary’s legacy will continue to live in our hearts. The memories of her will shine a light on how she touched our lives and encouraged us to be good to one another. Her paper as the Matron of her family shows her heart’s desire to leave a godly impression on all who really knew her. Her light still shines
Rest Mary in eternal peace, singing in heaven’s joy, and worshipping in God’s glory.
