In Loving Memory of Mary J. Coursen
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary JoAnn Coursen, who passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026 at Samaritan Medical Center. JoAnn brought warmth and kindness to all who knew her.
JoAnn was born on December 23, 1934 in Orchard Park to parents William and Helen Walsh.
She graduated with honors from High School and went on to attend Alfred State College, where she received a Secretarial Degree.
JoAnn dedicated many years to a fulfilling secretarial career earning respect and admiration from her colleagues. She met her future husband while employed by NY Central Railroad in Buffalo. Within a few years he took a position with Conrail in Watertown, relocating their family to Adams Center. JoAnn was a medical transcriptionist at Mercy Hospital before she found her true passion working at Jefferson Community College. Her commitment to excellence, integrity and compassion touched countless lives and left a lasting impact on those around her. She held that position for 20 years retiring at the age of 73.
JoAnn is survived by her children William (Deborah) Coursen, Elizabeth (Chris) Brown, Suzanne Pezzanite, David (Niki) Coursen. Her Grandchildren Adam (Lydia) Coursen, Nina (Andy) Faber, Shawn (Amanda) Brown, Brian (Victoria) Brown, Jill (Josh) Obrochta, Jake (Paige) Coursen and Katie Coursen. Her Great Grandchildren Kilian, Stella, Mallory, Mabel, Brynlee, Adeline, Ivy and a niece Nancy (Rick) Peterson.
JoAnn was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, John J Coursen Jr in 2001 as well as her brother William (Beverly) Walsh and her sister Patricia (Raymond) Suplicki.
A devout Catholic, JoAnn was an active member of Holy Family Church and a member of The Legion of Mary. Her faith was very important to her.
JoAnn enjoyed cross stitching beautiful pictures that she framed for family in addition to knitting prayer shawls for the residents of local nursing homes. Those who knew JoAnn will remember her unwavering kindness, wisdom, and sense of humor.
Our family is eternally grateful to Nancy, our mom's caregiver and friend. Nancy's commitment, strength, and empathy provided peace of mind giving mom exceptional care over the past 3 years. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ruth as well for her unwavering support and kindness. Their professional care and genuine warmth made an immeasurable difference, allowing our mom to remain at home surrounded by love.
A Funeral Mass in honor of JoAnn will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at Holy Family Church. A calling hour will precede the Mass from 11:00am-12:00pm. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate the remarkable life of JoAnn Coursen.
Memorial donations may be made to DPAO or Holy Family Church in JoAnn’s memory.
JoAnn will be dearly missed but never forgotten. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
