Not sure what to say?

Mary was such a good person, a kind soul, and always welcoming. She was a dear friend to our family. My favorite Mary story that she would remind me of was when her and Stevie were dating. I was a little girl living across the street and saw her one day knocking on the McKeons door. I yelled across the street “you know only Stevie is home” and she replied “I know”, and I said “ and you are still going in??” I loved that memory. She always loved her Stevieit was a great love story,...

Mary will remain a loving memory in my heart. The kindness she showed to all the kids at Walden School was so special. Miss Mary’s warm smile was so welcoming and we are so fortunate our son got to know her. An Angel for sure looking over us now.

Devastated to hear this. Mary was a walking hug- you couldn’t see her and not feel her genuine kindness and warmth. She brought so much joy to my children’s life and her wisdom made me confident Walden was the right place for our family. Her love extends not only to her family and friends, but to the community she helped build. She’ll be forever missed and her lessons will live on through all the children she guided.

Miss Murta , You were my favorite teacher and I will always be grateful to you . I know you are now enjoying your reunion with Big Steve , your parents and all your loved ones. I love you Deb.
Love Jaybird

I truly loved her. She was a doll baby. I will never forget her welcoming warmth.

Mary, was one of the gentlest, most soft spoken, gracious, kind and loving people God has ever blessed my life with. Being in her company along with her fun loving and equally gentle hearted husband Steve (Possum) was always a joy. I thank the Lord for sharing her with us and brightening this world with her presence in it. How lucky were we! Rest in peace Deb. ❤

I was so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. Everything that was said in her obituary rang so true. She always took the time to stop and talk when you would run into her and always with a smile on her face. She truly was a special person. She certainly left quite a legacy in her wake.

In loving memory of a wonderful woman. Her smile, dedication, and positivity made a huge impact on so many children and their families. We were blessed that our family was among them. Mary will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to all of her family and friends.

Mary's Obituary

Mrs. Mary Deborah McKeon (née Murta), age 73, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on October 17, 2025, in Springfield, Pennsylvania. Born on September 9, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mary lived a life defined by kindness, compassion, and unwavering love and support for her family and friends.

Mary’s journey in education began at Notre Dame de Lourdes grade school and continued through Cardinal O'Hara High School, where she graduated in 1970. She earned her undergraduate degree from West Chester University in 1974 and later completed a Master's degree in Reading at Saint Joseph's University. In all settings, Mary was a consummately admired and respected classmate.

Mary devoted her professional life to nurturing and inspiring young people.  She began her teaching career at Our Lady of Peace in Milmont Park, where she quickly became a perennial favorite among students. Her gift for teaching and deep commitment to guiding children’s growth led her to The Walden School, where she spent 38 remarkable years. For 26 of those years, Mary taught first and second grade with joy and encouragement that left a lasting impression on generations of students. In the final 12 years of her career, Mary served as Head of School—a role in which her extraordinary bigheartedness, intelligence, and student-centered leadership earned her the admiration and respect of families and students alike.

Mary was deeply loved by all who knew her. Her home on Colonial Park Drive was a haven of warmth and hospitality. Whether it was a late afternoon get together, Saturday visits with her grandchildren, or her annual Christmas Eve celebration, Mary created an atmosphere where everyone felt welcomed and cherished. Her yearly Ocean City retreat at “3928” was no different—serving as the heart of summer gatherings filled with food, drinks, dancing, card games, storytelling, and laughter.

Mary was the beloved wife of 38 years to the late Steve “Possum” McKeon.  Mary was also a loving mother to her children, Stephen McKeon (Samantha) and Katie McKeon, and adored Mimi to her beautiful grandchildren, Stevie, Matty, and Mae McKeon.

Mary is survived by her devoted siblings and sisters-in-law: Paul Murta (Daria), Kathleen Swierczek (Jack), Maureen Reilly (John F.X.), Carol O'Leary, (the late Billy) Barbara Quinn (Kevin), and Lori Callahan (Jim). She also leaves behind many treasured nieces and nephews whose lives were shaped by Mary's love and generosity. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Charlotte Murta & her in-laws, Paul and Elizabeth McKeon.

Mary was extraordinarily good-natured and truly enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.  Her legacy is one of meaningful connection and unconditional love. Mary had an unmatched ability to see the best in others and made it a point to express her love openly and often. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, easy laugh, and joyful presence will be missed beyond measure.

May Mary’s memory continue to bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:15 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 on October 24, 2025, at St. Dorothy's Parish, 4910 Township Line Road.  Burial will follow mass at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CityTeam Chester, an organization close to Mary's heart.
