On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, Matthew Charles Hohne, loving father of three children, passed away at the age of 53. Matt was born on September 18, 1967 in Whittier, CA to Bob and Mary Hohne. He received his biology degree from Fresno State in 1990. In 1993, he married Karen Hohne, who passed away in 2014. Together, they raised two daughters, Maggie and Christina and one son, James.
Matt had a strong passion for the outdoors. He particularly loved fishing and traveled domestically and internationally to fish with friends and family and regularly added to his collection of fishing boats and gear. Matt coupled his love for the outdoors into his career as a mammal keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and most recently at Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL for 18 years. In between these two career stops, he worked at the Peace River Refuge & Ranch in Silver Springs, FL.
More importantly, Matt was hailed by all as a loving member of both his immediate family and extended family, and loved nothing more than sharing his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit with others. His dry and sarcastic humor often left every room in a better mood than before he got there.
Matt was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Hohne, and his father, Bob Hohne. He is survived by his mother, Mary, and his three children, Maggie, Christina, and James. In addition, he leaves behind his 6 siblings, 14 nieces and nephews, and 6 great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 720 12th St., Clermont, FL 34711 at 11 o’clock a.m. Please RSVP via the link below for our repast meal following services.

I became friends with Karen the first day of her new school when she moved to Rye,NY in 5th grade. Our friendship remained until her death 6 years ago. I still remember meeting Matt for the first time, and seeing how happy and well matched the two of them were. My husband Jamie and I have enjoyed meeting up with them over the years and watching their growing beautiful family. We are saddened by the loss of a great father, family member and friend. Matt was gentle, kind and had a wonderful smile. While our hearts are broken over this tragedy, our solace is knowing that he has begun his next journey with his beloved Karen.

There’s a comfort knowing certain people are in this world, so when they’re gone, it leaves a giant void. I got the pleasure of working with Matt at the San Diego Wild Animal Park years ago. I have so many fond memories of his kindness, smile, jokes, and a lot of laughter! I will never forget you Matt. Rest in peace dear friend and may love surround your family always.

I will miss talking with Matt during my visits to DAK. His was a good natured soul whose company was always welcomed. I am also going to miss that "meaty" paw of his that he would offer whenever I came by. My sincere condolences to his family, both at home and at DAK. I know his presence was and now his absence is greatly felt by all who knew him.

To Matt's family:
I am deeply sorry about the loss of Matt. So sad and unbelievable. I often shared with him stories about my daughters career's progress and he shared his. I will miss those moments. Matt was a formidable person with a funny sense of humor - a very polite and decent man. My condolences and blessings for his family
