I was blessed to meet Maurice a year ago. I truly enjoyed trading coins with him and admired his knowledge.
Our condolences to the family.

I was a classmate of Maurice at Sacred Heart School in Fort Madison along with some of the others who have posted. I am very sorry to hear of his passing.

I went to Sacred Heart elementary school with Maurice. He was one of my mom's favorite students. My condolences to his family and all his loved ones.

Sympathy is extended to Maurice's family. He was one special, talented man and will be missed by so many. For the customers on the receiving end of Maurice's handiwork, you are blessed!

Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always.

Maurice and I were classmates in grade school at Sacred Heart in FM. We hung around some in 7th and 8th grade and I'd went to his house for lunch a few times. We played youth baseball against each other. He pitched and had quite a fast ball. God Bless to his family. RIP, Maurice.

Maurice Anthony Holdefer was born January 15, 1952 in Fort Madison, Iowa.  He received his education in Fort Madison, graduating from high school in 1970.  Following high school, Maurice began working for the railroad and continued in that job for twenty two years.  Maurice opened Wood Treasures where he made all types of woodworking projects.  He traveled throughout the United States selling his pieces.

In 1999, Maurice moved to Emmetsburg where he was employed at I.E.I.  He was united in marriage to Teresa Rhea on November 23, 2000 in Emmetsburg.

Maurice later was employed as a meat cutter at Food Pride and then opened M&T Woodworks, doing custom woodworking.  B.T. Buhrow took over Maurice’s business and Maurice began working for Buhrow Construction doing custom cabinetry, designing bookshelves and furniture as well as any other projects that were presented to him.  There was never any project too big or too small for Maurice to undertake.  He made countless items for benefits and auctions.  Even though Maurice worked at Buhrow Construction, the other employees referred to it as “Maurice’s Shop”.  No matter how busy he was, Maurice always had time to talk to you about your project.  His talent for woodworking was second to none and his completed projects were works of perfection.

Besides woodworking, Maurice loved to buy and sell coins.  He enjoyed fishing, taking drives around the countryside with Teresa and playing pool.  Maurice also looked forward to sitting down with a Busch Lite and talking to his co-workers and friends.

Maurice passed away Saturday, July 23, 2022 at Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 70.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gabe Holdefer and a sister, Paula.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Holdefer of Emmetsburg, Iowa; a son, Thad Holdefer of Burlington, Iowa; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary of Colorado and Melissa of Illinois; as well as countless acquaintances and friends.Arrangements by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home
