Maurice's Obituary

Maurice (Maurie) Willard Stevenson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on July 9, 2025.

A faithful steward of the land, a devoted family man, and a lifelong learner, Maurie lived a life rooted in service, simplicity, and joy.  He was born on September 27, 1931, and raised in Columbus, NJ, on Meadowview Farm. He married the love of his life, Anne Rockhill, on September 12, 1953 and they built their first house together, across from Meadowview Farm.  They soon started a family and moved to Crosswicks, NJ, to raise their five children.  Maurie, along with his wife, Anne, established and operated Stevenson Supply Company of Mt Holly, NJ, in 1962. The company is now celebrating over 60 years of service and in its third generation of family operation.

Maurie’s heart belonged to the land. A proud dairy farmer and member of the Mansfield Township 4H Club and Civics Club in his early years, he carried his love of growing things throughout his life, never letting his hands stray far from the soil. Even in his final days, he could be found tending his garden with care and curiosity, living proof that once a farmer, always a farmer.

A 1950 graduate of Moorestown Friends School, where he was a two-sport athlete, Maurie embodied the Quaker values that shaped his life: integrity, humility, and quiet strength. He was an active member of the Crosswicks Friends Meeting, and his deep faith was evident in both his words and actions.

He served with pride in the New Jersey Army National Guard and was a founding member of the PASDA (Princeton Area Swimming and Diving Assoc.) and a very active parent and member of Country Pool Club and Swim Team in Chesterfield, NJ, a place that would become a hub of family memories and community connection.

Maurie was a man who never stopped moving, never stopped wondering, and never stopped cheering on the ones he loved. Whether on the sidelines of a swim meet, race, game, or recital, he was present in the lives of his loved ones, often driving miles just to be alongside them. His pride in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was impossible to miss.

A true family man, he found deep joy in summer days in Maine and sunny winters in Florida, surrounded by his family and friends. He lived simply but fully - always reading, always thinking ahead, always curious, and giving generously of his time, his wisdom, and his love.

Those who knew him remember the twinkle in his eye, his mischievous smile, his warm presence, and the way he made you feel like you mattered. He was our biggest cheerleader, our steady guide, and our quiet rock.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, curiosity, kindness, and service; a life lived with purpose and heart. He showed us how to live well, to love deeply, and to always keep looking ahead.

Maurie is predeceased by his wife, Anne R. Stevenson, his parents Hartley M. and Elizabeth W. Stevenson, and his grandson, Kyle Stevenson. Maurie is survived by his five children: Laurie A. Gorby and her husband David of Towson, MD, William M. Stevenson and his wife Lisa of Waitsfield, VT, Drew W. Stevenson and his wife Sharon of Shamong, NJ, Mandy S. Hudson and her husband Wayne of Sparks, MD, and Brian L. Stevenson and his wife Kristiana of Rogers, KY; his brother Calvin Stevenson of Edgewater Park, NJ; his ten grandchildren: Rebecca Gorby, Andrew Gorby and his wife Ashley, Chelsea Frederick and her husband, Jake, Will Stevenson, Brad Stevenson and his wife Marcy, Cole, Pearce and Scott Hudson, Elliot Stevenson and partner, Titus and Elizabeth Stevenson; as well as his six great-grandchildren: Eli, Wyn and Esa Gorby, Olivia and Spencer Stevenson and Kellen Frederick.  Maurie is also survived by his close, dear friend of many years, Janet Aaronson.

A gathering for family and friends will be held on Sunday, July 13 from 12:00-2:00, followed by a Memorial Meeting for Worship at 2:00, both held at Crosswicks Friends Meeting, 15 Front Street, Crosswicks, NJ.

A special thank you to the community of Medford Leas, Maurie’s home for the last 9 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crosswicks Friends Meeting, PO Box 456, Crosswicks, NJ 08515.
