Michael's Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, son, Papa, brother, uncle, great-grandfather, and friend, Michael Joe Brooks, who left us peacefully on October 13, 2025, at the age of 75.

Michael Joe Brooks was born to Bobby Joe Brooks and Ava Louise Sylvester on January 12, 1950, in Walters, Oklahoma. Mike proudly served as the Head of Maintenance for City View ISD for over 30 years. Students and staff alike will remember him as a friendly face who kept the district running smoothly, always ready with a tool and a kind word.

Outside of work, Mike was at his happiest exploring the great outdoors. He loved camping trips, whether it was setting up a campsite with his family, fishing, playing card games, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of a quiet fire. He loved working with his hands, making items out of wood or tinkering with his tools. When he wasn't relaxing in nature, Mike could be found at the casino, where he enjoyed the thrill of a good game of slots with his wife Peggy.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Joe and Ava Louise; his wife, Peggy Brooks; his brother, Greg Brooks; his sister, Stephanie Gail Brown; his uncle, Lois Anthony Zachary; his aunt, Mary “Pete” Zachary; his uncle, Carl Brooks; his step-granddaughter, Shaw Marie Matz; his great-nephew, Denver Bell; and his brother-in-law, Bill Baird.

He is survived by his daughter, Ava LaDawn Baten and her husband Earnie Baten of Amarillo, TX; his son, Lynthomas Justin Brooks of Lawton, OK; his step-daughter, Ann M. Matz of Wichita Falls, TX; his step-son, Frederick J. Matz Jr. and his wife Martie C. Matz of Holliday, TX; his grandchildren, Sydnee Venhaus and her husband Jace Venhaus, Michael Brooks, and Evelyn Brooks; his step-grandchildren, Marshall Swiger and wife Shelana Swiger, Michael Swiger and wife Paige Swiger, Dalton Matz and wife Kelsey Humphrey, and Hunter Matz and wife Shelby Matz; his brother, Steve Brooks; his sister, Tresa Brooks; as well as multiple great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 25, 2025, between 5:30 and 7:30 pm at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home in Wichita Falls. All who knew and loved Mike are invited to visit the family.

May he rest in peace, reuniting with family and friends, forever playing a winning hand, and camping under a sky full of stars.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.owensandbrumley.com
