When I think of my dear friend, Michael, many words automatically come to mind: kind, thoughtful, humble, funny, generous (to a fault!), I am so very grateful for the 70+ years we knew one another. Mike, in high school, was at the top of his class, excelling there as well as in his four years at LeMoyne, yet his academic success was not what seemingly motivated him.
He lived a simple life, motivated by the maxim: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I recall one day,...

Michael Dennis Fitzgerald, Watertown, passed away Saturday, January 24th at Samaritan Medical Center. He was 84 years old.
Michael was born on October 25, 1941, and was baptized on Pearl Harbor Day. Growing up, he and I, his brother, often found ourselves in the usual sibling quarrels of youth. With five years separating our ages, our interests did not always align, leading us to have little in common during our formative years. Despite these differences, Michael distinguished himself with a saintly character, marked by kindness, patience, and genuine love for others.
Michael was a compassionate individual who devoted himself to the care of our mother during her later years, ensuring her comfort until her passing at age 86. His affection extended beyond people to animals, as evidenced by the many pets he cared for throughout his life, including birds, fish, and rabbits.
Michael attended Holy Family School and Immaculate Heart Academy before continuing his education at Le Moyne College, a Jesuit institution in Syracuse, N Y. After graduating, he spent several years teaching in a small town in southern N Y. Later, he transitioned from teaching to work in a small factory in Syracuse. Eventually, he joined the New York State Employment office in Syracuse and was later transferred to Watertown.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar W. and Harriet M. (Snyder), as well as his brother William E. and sister-in-law Patricia L. (Kelker). He was a devoted uncle to Bill and Patricia’s three children, their spouses, and their children, offering them his love and support.
Our family expresses eternal gratitude to the dedicated caregivers, friends, and extended family who offered unwavering support, compassion, and assistance throughout Michael’s life and illness. We are especially thankful to friends Bob, Jim, Sue, Ann and Gary; The Fresenius Kidney Care team; Cathy, who provided committed treatment transport; Fr. Mickey Demo, and Communicant/s; neighbor who shoveled snow; special bus driver; Wendy of Samaritan Medical Center; Bill, Morgan & Jason of Reed & Benoit Funeral Home; and many others. Each of these individuals embodied the loving hands and feet of Jesus, and they continue to be remembered in our prayers.
Spring services will be held in Glenwood Cemetery for friends and family.
In honor of Michael’s memory, donations may be made to the Samaritan Medical Center Foundation of NNY, Inc.
