Michael J. Gorman, aka "Red", boomed out of this life on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long branch after battling cancer for several months.Born in Newark to John and Anna Gorman in 1928, he moved to South Orange in 1963 for the next 32 years to raise a family, and spent his last 21 years in Colts Neck enjoying his retirement years. A child of the Depression, he held many odd jobs in his early life to help his family make ends meet. During the Korean War he enlisted in the Navy as part of the "Fighting Seabees", building bridges and buildings to support our ground troops. After leaving the Navy, he matriculated at Newark College of Engineering as an electrical engineer but had to withdraw in order to help pay for his father's medical expenses. Of Irish descent and with flaming red hair, he found a high paying job with the iron workers and continued his trade as a member of Local 11 in Newark for the next 49 years, helping build many of the bridges, hospitals and commercial structures dotting the NJ landscape. He served on the executive board of the local for over 32 years and received the Samuel Gompers Achievement Award in 1997 to recognize his contributions to the organized labor movement over his career.He leaves behind his devoted bride of 62 years, Mary Ann Gorman (nee Domalewski), 5 children and their spouses: Michael Jr. and Dossie Gorman of Madison NJ, John and Anne Marie Gorman of Morristown NJ, Susan and James Bond of Valrico Fla, Matthew and Clare Gorman of Flanders, NJ, and Mary Ann and Daniel Sweeney of Coral Springs Fla., and 10 loving Grandchildren.A funeral mass will be offered at St. Mary's Church on Route 34, Colts Neck NJ on Wednesday May 25 at 10:30 AM followed by visitation and a repast to celebrate a life well lived.
