Michael's Obituary

Francis “Michael” Lowery passed away on July 21, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle in Columbus, Mississippi.

Born on November 11, 1951, in Waynesboro, Mississippi, Michael was the son of the late Richard Francis Lowery and Grace Covington Lowery. He was raised in Pascagoula, where he spent much of his life. Michael began his career at Ingalls Shipbuilding and later found a long-term home at Walmart, where he served as a dedicated associate. He grew up as an active member at Eastlawn Baptist Church and became a member of First Baptist Church of Pascagoula as a young adult. Michael made a lasting impact in his community before relocating to Columbus in 2000. There, he continued working with Walmart until his retirement and was a long-standing member at Fairview Baptist Church, and became a member of Brooksville Baptist Church.

Michael was a devoted reader, amateur historian, and passionate genealogist. He served faithfully on the Historic Preservation Commission in Columbus from 2007 to 2015. He also assisted with the research for a book about cemeteries in Lowndes County, where he was acknowledged by the author.  In retirement, he spent countless hours at the local library, uncovering family history and sharing stories with his nieces.

Michael brought joy to those around him with his wonderful sense of humor. He was also a loyal Ole Miss fan and could often be found cheering on the Rebels. Michael never missed a birthday and always made sure to wish his sister and nieces a happy birthday, along with a heartfelt message on Mother’s Day.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Grace Lowery. Michael is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Ron Harper of Columbus; his nieces Jessica Harper Moore (Lance) of Madison, MS, Lindsay Harper Finnegan (David) of Madison, MS, and Alicia Harper Truesdale (Allan) of Columbus, MS; and his beloved great-nieces and nephews: Julia, Catherine, Harper, Liam, Patrick, and Grace.

Michael will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Lowndes Funeral Home, located at 1131 Lehmberg Road, Columbus, MS 39702. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
