Michael's Obituary

Michael Medvid, beloved husband of the late Marion Medvid, passed away at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home on October 13, 2021, at the age of 86 years.Michael was born June 30, 1935, in the Insinger District, SK, to Nick and Helen (Nekurak) Medvid. He grew up on a farm south of Sheho, SK, where he attended Deer Creek School. During his youth, he enjoyed playing many musical instruments including guitar, harmonica, mandolin, and violin. He also enjoyed hunting ducks and rabbits with his dad and brothers and helping with the threshing crews. At around the age of 18, he left home to work with the Canadian Pacific Railway. During winter months, he worked in Ontario cutting wood. In September of 1965, Mike’s eye was caught by a blue-eyed beautiful cook, Marion Hesselwood. They were united in marriage on July 2, 1966, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Yorkton, SK. Together, they raised their sons, Kenneth, Paul, David, and Kevin. Over the next 20+ years, Mike farmed alongside his wife, and he was extremely proud of her ability to keep up with farm work, and still always have the baking ready for the week’s farmer’s market. Mike was known for having an incredible green thumb. He always had a huge garden, and in the summertime, nobody could leave without a bag of fresh goodies. He also had an unbelievable way with animals and was always working with horses, teaching the next round of milk cows to tie and which stall they had to go to, and was always the first guy the neighbours called when they needed help at calving time. He was a big man with an even bigger heart. He always looked forward to somebody stopping by for coffee, and his nieces and nephews coming over for a tractor ride or visit. As he eased into retirement, he went to work for neighbouring farmers. Once semi-retired, he loved the opportunity to work alongside his wife, for Botkin, doing road construction. For the next ten years, he enjoyed helping in the kitchen, water hauling, and doing book work. No matter where he went, he still always had a garden. One summer, he grew so many potatoes, he took a whole truck box full, along many boxes of tomatoes, to The Soup Haven in Yorkton, SK. At the age of 75, Mike reluctantly fully retired and collected his first pension cheque. After retirement, Mike and Marion enjoyed having the grandkids spend as much time with them as possible. They continued to enjoy growing huge gardens, countless card games, the weekly Saturday Night Get Together, Bingo, and visits with friends. They also enjoyed ‘babysitting’ a small heard of cows.On June 4, 2017, Marion passed away. A part of Mike left with her, and he looked forward to the day they would meet again. Mike resided in The Yorkton and District Nursing Home until his peaceful passing on October 13, 2021. He will be remembered as a wise, humble, man with a big heart, who lived his life serving the Lord the best way he knew how. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.Mike was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Helen Medvid; his wife, Marion Medvid; one infant son; brothers, Bill, Matt, and Almer; and his nephew, Garry Woitowicz. He is survived by his sons: Kenneth (Lori) of Ketchikan, Alaska, Paul (Marge) of Faro, Yukon, David (Donna) of Canora, and Kevin (Amanda) of Yorkton; his grandchildren: Shaine, Tessa, Noah, Sara, Grace, Nick, and Tony; sisters, Olga Woitowicz of Dryden, ON, and Angeline Onufreychuk of Saskatoon, SK; and brothers, Ken Neckay of St. Albert, AB, and Orest Medvid of Sheho, SK; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends. A Prayer Service was held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 19, 2021, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 20, 2021, from St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Insinger, SK, with Very Rev. Fr. Leonid Malkov as Celebrant. Rite of Committal followed at the St. Nicholas Parish Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to The Soup Haven, 186 Allenbrooke Dr., Yorkton, SK, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Michael Medvid.
