Michael's Obituary

Michael Noland Scott, Sr. was born on September 11, 1953, in Albemarle County, Virginia, to Francis Scott, Sr. and Rachael Scott.

As a child, Michael was known for his playful spirit and quick wit. A natural prankster, he loved to make others laugh. He earned the nickname “Hard Rock” for his protective nature, never backing down when it came to defending his loved ones. Beneath his strong exterior, was a heart that was gentle, generous, and pure as gold. From an early age, Michael was admired for his determination and tireless work ethic, if something needed to be done, he made sure it was accomplished.

After moving to Roanoke, Virginia, Michael attended Roanoke City Schools, where he excelled both in the classroom and in athletics. He was a football player, a state championship wrestler, a tennis player, and a bodybuilder. He graduated from William Fleming High School in 1972.

Immediately after high school, Michael began his career with Norfolk & Western Railroad, later known as Norfolk Southern. He worked diligently for more than 20 years and retired as a Conductor.

In 1978, Michael married the love of his life, Gloria M. Scott. Their union was blessed with five phenomenal children, Janet, Michael Jr., Cecil, Alisha, and Philip and through them, 14 beloved grandchildren.

Michael possessed an undeniable, melodic voice and loved to sing. Most importantly, Michael cherished his relationship with Jesus Christ. He served as  an ordained Deacon in the Lord’s church and faithfully served his Savior, his family, his church, and his community.

Michael will forever be remembered for his iconic laugh that filled every room he gentered. He had a passion for cooking, and his meals, always prepared with love, became a treasured part of family gatherings and community events. His recipes were eagerly anticipated and enjoyed by all who had the privilege to share them.

On September 3, 2025, Michael answered his Father’s call from labor to reward, entering into eternal rest surrounded by his loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Scott, Sr. and Rachael Scott, and by his sisters, Bertha Barrows and Ann Payne.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 47 years, Gloria M. Scott; his children, Janet Scott, Michael N. Scott Jr. (Hollani), Cecil W. Scott (Precious), Alisha M. Clark, and Philip D. Scott; 14 grandchildren; his siblings, Francis Scott, Jr.(Janet), Alphonso Scott (Carol), Isaac (Charlene) and Lynda (Oliver) as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and loved ones.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 13, 2025, 2:00PM at Pilgrim Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. Arrangements by Serenity Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
