Minerva Elizabeth Bethmann, “Skip”, lost her battle with Alzheimer’s and passed away Saturday, June 18th at the age of 96. She was born to the late Ruth and Ted Marre in St. Louis, MO, where she also grew up with her late sister, Bette Johnson. Skip is also predeceased by her true love, Joseph Bethmann, whom she has now reunited with after 27 years apart. He no doubt did not waste any time to shower her with affection.
Skip leaves behind her daughter Linda (Jack) Massa and son Terry Bethmann, along with seven grandchildren, Kim (Jeremy) Rubenstein, Tammi (Chris) Ruzicka, Tony Massa, Jenny Bethmann, Jonathan (Haley) Bethmann, Brian (Lori) Bethmann, and Terry Bethmann Jr. She was proud to also be “GiGi” to 12 greatgrandchildren, including Nicholas and Vivienne Rubenstein, Madden, Maizy, and Mackensie Ruzicka, Elijah Massa, Alexis and Valerie Sublett, and Nevaeh and Malia Bethmann. She was a wonderful Mother, Mother-in-Law, Aunt, Cousin, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Daughter, Wife and friend to so many and touched countless lives throughout her 96 ½ years on Earth with us.
Skip received her nickname early in life as she was caught “skipping” rather than walking often. Even in her last years, she was always on the move. As she grew up, Skip raised her family while also being the bookkeeper for Memorial Park Cemetery, where she will now be laid to rest, and later also for her family business with husband Joe. She was never idle and enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, gardening, sewing, traveling, and playing many card games. She played poker until the end, although she had her own set of rules by then and always seemed to win. She had a love for dogs, butterflies and elephants. She adored elephants, collecting hundreds of trinkets of them. Finally in her 80s, she was fortunate to get to spend a week in Africa with family and was dazzled by being so up close to them in their natural setting.
She adored spending time with family and friends. She was one of the oldest in her group to play Bunko, in which she hosted well into her 80s. She was the Grandmother we were all so grateful to have – endless hours of fun with box forts, flavor-ice, tractor rides, games, homemade chex mix, fishing and snuggles. Her Great-grandchildren were fortunate to participate in some of her favorite activities with her as well, including eating a lot of dessert! A very special thank you to all of you whom assisted with her care as her health declined. We could not have done it without you!
Visitation Thursday, June 30, 11:00 AM until time of service at 1:00 PM at Collier's Funeral Home. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers to the family, please consider a donation to The Alzheimer’s Association in Skip’s memory. https://www.alz.org/greatermissouri
