Miriam's Obituary

SULLIVAN, Miriam Henrietta - June 4, 1925 – January 16, 2015 - Miriam Sullivan died peacefully on January 16 at the Vancouver Hospice. Predeceased by her dear husband Gilbert, she is survived by her loving children Patricia, Kingston; Frank (Karen) and Catherine, Vancouver; Timothy and Michael, Ottawa; and grandchildren Phillip, Joseph and Ailís. Daughter of Francis and Miriam Norman, both deceased. She is also mourned by friends and family in Cornwall, Vancouver and England. Born in Bethnal Green, London, England, Miriam was educated at Howrah House in Poplar, and evacuated to Bath during World War Two. She married Gilbert in 1951 and they emigrated to Cornwall, Ontario, the following year. There they raised their five children and shared a commitment to community volunteer work. Always a cheerful willing helper, Miriam was a long-time member of the Catholic Women's League of St. Francis de Sales Parish and the Auxiliary of Hotel Dieu Hospital. In 2005, she moved to Vancouver, where she enjoyed activities with the West End Seniors Network and the New Roots Seniors Group. Married to a man named Gilbert Sullivan, it's not surprising that Miriam's experience in a London church choir led her to sing in the chorus of several G&S operettas produced by the Cornwall Little Theatre. Later in life, Gilbert encouraged her to take up golf and they enjoyed many games with family and friends on the idiosyncratic course at Loon Lake, New York, a favorite vacation spot for years. Many thanks to the wonderful staff and volunteers of the Vancouver Hospice for their compassionate care. The Mass of the Resurrection with Commendation and Farewell will be held in St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church on Saturday February 14, 2015 at 11 AM. Rite of Committal at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family welcomes donations to the Canadian Cancer Society www.cancer.ca and the Vancouver Hospice Society www.vancouverhospice.org. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall. Online messages of condolences may be made in the obituary section of: www.wilsonfuneralhome.ca
