Mone's Obituary

Mone Samounty, age 87, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, passed away on March 11, 2026, following a stroke.

Mone was born on October 5, 1938, in Nongbouatha, Laos, to Boualee and Lane Samounty. He was the middle child of six siblings, most of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from high school and went on to attend medical school in Savannaket, Laos. His medical training proved invaluable during the Vietnam War, where he served as a medic alongside U.S. forces with the U.S. National Defense Force Support Command Civil Military.

Following the war, Mone fled Laos with his wife and six young children, seeking refuge in Thailand, where they lived in refugee camps for two to three years. The family was later relocated to another camp in the Philippines for an additional one to two years before receiving sponsorship to come to the United States. They were sponsored by his wife’s niece, Khamghna Rasavong, and her family in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Mone and his family arrived in Milwaukee in December 1986.

Throughout his life in the United States, Mone was an active member of the Lao Christian Church, St. Michael’s Church, and the Lao Temple of Milwaukee. He believed in unity across faiths and saw no boundaries between religions.

Mone was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather who brought joy to all of his grandchildren. Due to health challenges and PTSD from his wartime experiences, he was unable to maintain full-time employment, but he remained a strong and caring presence for his family. His beloved wife passed away in April 2016.

He is survived by his children: Souksakhone, Sisambath, Chantha, Phouthasat, and Tommy Samounty, along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.

A Christian service will be held at Brett Funeral Home, Inc. on March 21, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
