Obituary

Mr. Benjamin's Obituary

Benjamin (Ben) Sykes Jr. was born to Hazel Marie and Benjamin Sykes Sr. on July 15, 1967, in Flint Michigan. Benjamin was a graduate of Flint Northern High School. After graduation, Ben attended Grambling State University in Grambling, LA, and was accepted on the football team as a walk-on under the illustrious coach Eddie Robinson. After one year, he returned to Flint.

Ben’s heart was his own until he received his most precious gift in 1991 with the birth of his only child Divania whom he loved unconditionally and unwaveringly until his passing.

Affectionately known as 'Big Ben' throughout Flint, he loved spending time with friends, especially with his Gamblers Inc. crew, whether playing poker or attending sporting events, he was always on the move. He also was an avid sneaker lover and was always obtaining the newest pair. Anyone who knew Big Ben knows how opinionated he was. You have surely been on the other end of a conversation where he was voicing his opinion on any topic from relationships to politics always with the best of intentions because he wanted to see everyone win at what they were striving to achieve.

Big Ben made his transition to his eternal home on October 7, 2024.

Benjamin Sykes, Jr. leaves to cherish his legacy, his daughter Divania Sykes of Houston, TX; 3 sisters, Eva Jean Thompson of Tampa, FL, Trina Sykes of Flint, MI, and Tonya Sykes-Boyd of Austin, TX, and brother Anthony (Angela) Sykes of Florence, TX; nephew Demarius Lane, and niece Deirdras Jones of Austin, TX; and a host of other aunts, cousins, and friends.

Ben Jr. was preceded in death by his mother Hazel Marie Sykes, father Benjamin Sykes Sr., uncles, James Sykes Jr., Charles Sykes, Scipio Jones Sr., Jimmy Barnett, and Ernest O’Neal; and aunts Annie Ruth Sykes, Catherine (Sykes) Jones, Alberta Barnett, and Betty Bell.

Big Ben has too many family and friends to write all their names, if by chance you don’t see yours, be comforted in knowing your name is written in the book of his life.
