Obituary

Mr. John's Obituary

Mr. John Anthony Nelson, affectionately known as “Skipper” or “Jay,” was the third child and the oldest son born to the late Peter George “Melvin” Nelson and Ruthie Mae Rogers Nelson.

Early Life & Faith

His Christian journey began at an early age at Jerusalem United Methodist Church in Cross, South Carolina. As a young boy, he dedicated his life to Christ “During Wilderness at JUMC” and became a faithful member of the church, where his foundation of faith was built and nurtured.

Education & Football Legacy

John attended Cross High School, where he became a “Legend” football player. Known for his leadership and talent, he proudly served as captain of the Cross High Trojans. Wearing his double-number jersey, he played linebacker with passion and skill, leaving a legacy as a football legend in his community. He graduated with the Class of 1976.

Career & Family

After graduation, John moved to Bayonne, New Jersey, where he was employed as a bus driver for the City of Newark, NJ for over 30 years.

In Bayonne, John married Carol Bryant Nelson, and from this union two beautiful daughters were born: Janae Anisha Nelson and Jaylynn Nelson.

Later Years & Passions

In his later years, John enjoyed watching Family Feud and football, and he had a special love for vintage cars, especially his cherished blue and white 1979 Cadillac. He was rarely without music, delighting in classic tunes from the 1960s and 70s. John was known for his rhythm, often making drumbeats with his thumbs, and his playful dance moves reminded many of Snoop Dogg.

John loved people and had a gift for laughter—he always had a joke ready to share. He was proud to be a leader, and he treasured his family deeply. Even through health challenges, he faithfully prayed for his siblings each night, never failing to end conversations with words of love, often saying, “Okay, sweetie pie.”

Legacy of Love

John was preceded in death by his parents, Peter George Melvin Nelson and Ruthie Mae Rogers Nelson; his grandmother, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hutchinson; and his youngest brother, Aundra “Andre” Melvin Nelson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving siblings: Hester Nelson Wilson and Patricia Nelson (Paul) Wilson, both of Cross, SC; Lester (Christine) Nelson of Columbia, SC; Clifford (Laverne) Nelson of Cross, SC;Louise “Horis” Harleston of Middletown, DE; Queen Hester Bennett Riley of Jacksonville, FL;  Mary Lee (Wille) Broughton of Eutawville, SC;  and Marvin (Cindy) Grant of Cross, SC.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Hope Mack Nelson of Cross, SC; his uncle, Frank (Emma) Rogers Jr. of Roxbury, MA; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

The family will be receiving friends at his residence, 2249 Ranger Drive, Cross, beginning Thursday, September 4, 2025, 3:00 - 7:00 P.M. only. Online condolences may be sent to www.shulermarshallfuneralhome.com.
