Marvin Carlas Sumpter, affectionately known as Rick, son of the late Luther Mae Dozier-Sumpter and Holman Sumpter, was born on August 27, 1954 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
He grew up in South Miami, Florida attending Saint John AME Church and received his education from the Miami-Dade County Public School system where he graduated from Southwest Miami Senior High Class of 1972.
At an early age, Marvin showed a deep love for trucks. As a child, he’d often stop whatever he was doing to watch and listen as the sanitation truck moved about the street. He’d imitate the sounds and movements of the machine until it left the street. This love of trucks stayed with him through adolescence into young adulthood where upon graduation from high school he pursued a commercial driver's license. For 43 years, Marvin worked as a semi-trailer truck driver and even earned an accolade of prestige for driving over a million miles without a single accident. His most well-known employer being the Burger King corporation.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to Ms. Priscilla Louise Sands on August 29, 1981. This union was blessed with two children.
Our beloved Marvin was adored by many throughout South Florida and South Carolina for his outgoing personality and “life of the party” spirit. He always had a joke or colorful commentary to offer ears from infant to elder. He valued time spent with family and friends after long hours spent on the road. Often bringing home BK toys and other collectors’ items for his daughters and other children in the family. While at home he enjoyed watching The Andy Griffith Show, Wrestling, Sanford and Son and Martin.
On Friday, September 18, 2020, God called our beloved Marvin home to rest. Waiting to welcome him were his father Holman Sumpter and mother Luther Mae Dozier-Sumpter.
Marvin leaves precious memories with many, including his Wife, Priscilla Louise Sands-Sumpter; Daughters: Candace (Knick), and Tracy (Juice) Sumpter; Grandsons: William and Patrick Isaac all of Miami, FL; Sisters: Roslyn Sumpter of Holly Hill, SC, Wanda Sumpter of Miami, FL, Eula Mae Grant, of Holly Hill, SC, Lynette Evins of Miami, FL; Brothers: Clifford (Priscilla) Sumpter of Holly Hill, SC and Elijah Booket, of Rome, GA, Jimmy (Charlene) Washington, of Columbia, SC; Nieces: Garrian Sumpter of Jacksonville, FL Danielle Sumpter of Miami, FL, Omesshia Grant-Hillard of Holly Hill, SC; Nephews: Anwan (Mercedes) Kelsey Veargis of Miami, FL, Clifford Sumpter Jr. of Holly Hill, SC, Jazz Washington of Columbia, SC, Omerick and Omarshariffe Grant of Holly Hill, SC; Aunts: Mattie Lou Frederick, Rosa Mae Culmer, Miriam Smith, Virginia (Henry) Thomas, all of Miami, FL; and a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends.
