Rufus Ned Simpson, Jr. was welcomed to this world on August 28, 1950, in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia. Rufus was a proud son of Rufus Ned Simpson, Sr. and Dorcas Charles.  His parents, along with his brother, Tourgee Simpson precede him in death.

Rufus was a bright light who lived and enjoyed life to the fullest. Even as a young student in the public schools of Crisp County, his light was always shining. In 1968, he graduated from A. S. Clark High School. Upon the completion of high school, Rufus enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country with honor and distinction. Upon the   completion of his tour, he was given an Honorable discharge.

Early in life, Rufus was introduced to the Lord at the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church. He was actively involved in the youth programs of the church. He was also a member of the choir. After moving, he united with New Day Community Church in Walthourville, Georgia.

Blessed with a genuine “gift of gab,” Rufus never met a stranger. Through his employment with the Cordele Police Department, a manager at Food Giant, and a custodian with the Crisp County School System, he built many lasting relationships always laughing, smiling and lending a hand to help.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed precious family moments. He was enthusiastic about education and willingly encouraged those close to him to always do their best. A die-hard sports fan, win, lose, or draw, he would yell “his” Washington Redskins.

On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, our bright light peacefully transitioned from this life to life eternal. Precious memories will forever be cherished by his loving and caring family:  his wife, Katie Harmon Simpson of Hinesville, Georgia; his daughters, Opal (Richard) Hayes of Hinesville, Georgia and Olivia (Tyrie) Jones of Enterprise, Alabama; his grandchildren, Marcus (Keondra) Barrett, Leah Hayes, and Richard Hayes, II all of Hinesville, Georgia; his sister, Alverna (Fred) Thompson of Washington, DC; his mother-in-law, Jessie Harmon of Cordele, Georgia; his sisters-in-law, Ruby (Donald) Daniels, Rosa Harmon, Beulah (Garner)  Morgan, Frankie Harmon, and Kasey Harmon; his brother-in-law, Freddy “Stony” Harmon; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
