A golden heart stopped beating on Monday, July 13, 2020 at Orangeburg Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Sanders “Son” Bailey, Sr. was at peace and God knew that his soul needed rest, so with arms wide open, God welcomed him home.
Sanders Bailey, affectionately known as “Son” was born on March 12, 1933 to the late Elijah Bailey and Clara M. Glover Bailey in Vance, South Carolina. Sanders attended the public schools of the area before entering the workforce.
Sanders was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Louise “Ethel” Bailey in 1952. They lived a blessed life as husband and wife for 63 years before Louise’s death on September 24, 2015. To this union, eight children were born.
Sanders was an active and faithful member of Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Eutawville, South Carolina until his health failed. His passion was music and church members were fortunate to hear his unique tenor voice during worship service. Sanders began his musical journey as a member of the Senior Choir. Singing on the Senior Choir was the ultimate dream for Sanders because he got to sing with his uncle, the late Peter Bailey who served as the head choir man. After his uncle’s health failed him, Sanders assumed the role of head choir man. When the original Male Chorus was organized at Springfield, Sanders along with the late Deacon Ivory Davis were popular members of the group because of their “quartet” style of singing with the tight harmonies. Being a good servant of God, Sanders was also a member of a local quartet group that traveled to churches spreading the “good news” of Jesus to audiences all over Orangeburg County. Sanders was also a member of the Trustee Board at Springfield.
Sanders battled several health issues over the years but was so fortunate to have a loving wife who cared for him until her death. After Louise’s death, his children did not skip a beat in attending to his every need. Whenever you saw his children you saw Sanders, with a beaming smile that lit up the room, clean shaven, well dressed, cheeky dimples and a twinkle in his eyes. Sanders knew his children and grandchildren were truly a blessing from God. One of his proudest moment was seeing his grandson Alex Brown on television playing professional football with the Kansas City Chiefs and knowing that he was the grandfather of a Super Bowl champion.
Sanders was an employee of the former Orangeburg County Consolidated School District Five for more than 40 years.
Sanders was predeceased by his loving parents, his devoted wife, and his sister Annie Lee Williams.
Those who will always cherish his memories are loving and devoted children, Sanders (Ann) Bailey, Jr. of New Jersey, Joanne (John) Howard of Pennsylvania, Jerome (Geraldine) Bailey of Holly Hill, SC, Caroline Bailey of New Jersey, Barbara (Malachi) Brooks, Julia Bailey and Willa ( David) Brown all of Holly Hill, SC and Alice Bailey of the home. Two grandchildren reared in the home, Dameion and Dontrell Thompson,26 grandchildren, 23 great grand children and one great-great grand; one brother, David Bailey of Holly Hill, SC, five sisters-in-law; Gussie Jenkins, Carrie Benjamin, Dora Johnson and Rebecca Goodwin of Holly Hill, SC; Rena Butler of Miami, Florida and a host of loving family and friends who will miss him dearly.
