Mrs. Hattie Lee “Princess” Asbery, a cherished soul and beacon of light to all who knew her, gracefully concluded her earthly journey on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at her home in Vance, South Carolina. Born in Santee, South Carolina, to Mr. Roy Lee Davis and Mrs. Minnie Tilley Davis, she was also the stepdaughter of Mrs. Pauline Hill Davis. Hattie was the last surviving sibling, preceded in death by her sisters, Annie Lue Anderson and Beatrice Wigfall, and her brother, Alexander Davis.

Hattie’s formative years included attending Oak Elementary School and graduating from Elloree High School. Early in life, she embraced her faith in Jesus Christ, participating actively in Felderville AME Church. Her spirit of adventure led her to New York City in 1957, where she married the love of her life, Mr. Harry Lee Asbery. Their union was blessed until his passing on November 21, 2008. In New York, Hattie joined Emanuel A.M.E. Church under Reverend H.R. Hughes's leadership, dedicating herself to Stewardess Board #4.

Professionally, Hattie’s compassion and work ethic shone brightly. She served as a nurse’s aide at New York Hospital’s newborn division, a laundromat manager, and a childcare provider from her home. Her versatility also saw her as a hairstylist assistant at Kenneth’s Hair Salon and Elizabeth Arden Salon. Alongside her husband, they founded H & H Trucking, managing shipping orders and billing services, marking their footprint as entrepreneurs. In 1990, they retired to their beloved Vance, South Carolina, building a beautiful home and re-immersing themselves in community life.

At Rock Hill A.M.E. Church, Hattie continued her lifelong dedication to service, contributing to the Pastor’s Aide Board, The Angelic Gospel Choir, and as a Sunday School Member.

Hattie’s legacy is lovingly carried forward by her three children, Angelina Asbery-Holmes (Keith Holmes) of New York City, now residing in Vance, SC; Dr. David Asbery (Tanisha Asbery) of Hamden, CT; Dr. Joseph Asbery of Bayonne, NJ; a stepbrother, Frank Tate of Orangeburg, SC; and stepsister, Mrs. Rose Lee Glover of New Jersey. Her six grandchildren, David M. Asbery (Tamiesha Asbery), Deron Holmes, Jamarl H. Asbery (Shanice Asbery), Corey Holmes, Nazaria K. Asbery, Andre M. Asbery; and five great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, will forever cherish her memory.

Known for her love of gardening, sewing, playing the piano, and culinary prowess, Mrs. Asbery enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. Her participation in the Vance Senior Citizen Center, especially enjoying Bingo, showcased her zest for life and community engagement.

Mrs. Hattie Lee “Princess” Asbery lived a full and vibrant life, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate to have known her. Her legacy of love, service, and joy continues to inspire all.  She will be dearly missed!

The family will be receiving friends 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. at the residence. Online condolences may be sent to www.shulermarshallfuneralhome.com.
