Myrtle Florence (Turner) Bell was born on March 16, 1936, in Waverly, Tennessee. She was raised by her mother Laura Jane (Turner) Mays and stepfather Hamilton Jake Mays, whom both has preceded her in death.
Myrtle was focused on her education throughout her childhood, graduating from Hampton High School class of 1953. She excelled in academics studies, whereas she earned valedictorian honors for her graduating class. Myrtle continued the path of pursuing a higher education by attending Tennessee State University, completing one year of college.
Myrtle then went on to serve her country by enlisting in the US Army in 1954, an era when women soldiers were referred to as WAC’s {the Women Army Corp}. She completed basic training at Ft. McCullen Alabama, afterwards completing military technical training and working as a dental specialist. After serving 2 active years in the US Army, Myrtle was honorably discharged in 1956.
Myrtle took advantage of the Army GI bill to enroll in cosmetology school and became a licensed beautician. She enjoyed her career as a beautician styling wigs at a well-known department store named Goldblatt’s in downtown Gary. After some years, an opportunity presented itself and she navigated a change of course that led to her being hired into the United States Postal Service. Myrtle’s career with the postal service began as letter carrier for many years, then advancing to a role in management. Her physical status required early retirement in 1982.
Myrtle’s achievements were rewarding, however the most glorified endeavor accomplished in her life was proclaiming Christ. She excepted Christ at an early age and after moving to Gary, Indiana, she joined First A.M.E. Church. Along with becoming an active member, she also served on the Women’s Missionary board and the Stewardess board. She was faithful and committed to attending and teaching Sunday school.
On March 20, 2026, Myrtle transitioned from this life and arrived at eternal rest in a place she calls “home.” She leaves to cherish her children; sons Marshall (Melvia) Bell, Kelvin (Mona) Bell, and daughter; Gioia (Rick) Calhoun, two sisters, Oneda Counsel and Peggy Kittrell; 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and relatives.
