Not sure what to say?

Nate was the person who brought me in the United States. He taught me so much about science and life. He was one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. He supported my NASA career and helped me make my dreams come true. I'll be forever grateful for his guidance, patience, care and service! May his soul find peace and may he watches over us.

Dear Nate,
Thank you for teaching me and caring about me, you will be missed. Alexia

Nate had a profound impact on both my life and career. He was a fierce advocate for my success as a student and deeply cared about setting us up to be not just smart doctors but caring and accountable ones. I will carry this spirit he had in the care I show my patients every day.

Nathaniel's Obituary

Dr. Nathaniel "Nate" Szewczyk, 52, passed away on July 26, 2025, in Athens, Ohio. A devoted scientist, educator, husband, and father. Nate’s life was marked by a deep commitment to discovery, service, and connection.

Born on January 28, 1973, in Mexico to David and Margaret Szewczyk, Nate’s early curiosity about the world blossomed into a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University before completing a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Pittsburgh. His academic path continued with postdoctoral work in Space Life Sciences at NASA Ames Research Center—an experience that reflected his passion for pushing the boundaries of human understanding.

Dr. Szewczyk served as a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Ohio University and was an investigator at the Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute. Through his dedication to research and education he mentored countless students and colleagues with his steady guidance and ability to make complex ideas accessible to all.

Beyond academia, Nate dedicated eleven years to emergency medical services. He helped run two ambulance services, taught and developed training curriculum, and participated in search and rescue operations—demonstrating his unwavering commitment to helping others.

Nate had a natural ability to connect with people. Whether through thoughtful conversation or quiet support during difficult moments, he was known for his kindness and steady presence. He approached challenges with care and clarity, always considering how best to serve those around him.

He shared a deep bond with his wife Amy. Together they explored the world—traveling extensively throughout their marriage—and found joy in discovering new places both near and far. Their shared adventures reflected Nate’s appreciation for learning through experience.

As a father to Mia, Nate delighted in sharing small anecdotes about things he read or discovered. He was always there for her—offering help when needed and challenging her when it mattered most. His thoughtful approach to parenting left an indelible mark on her life.

Nate found peace and inspiration in nature. He enjoyed hiking through forests, climbing mountains, kayaking across quiet waters, and observing wildlife wherever he went. These pursuits were not just hobbies but reflections of his enduring curiosity about the world around him.

He is survived by his beloved wife Amy and their daughter Mia. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Margaret Szewczyk.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.  Memorial donations may be made to the Ohio Academy of Science.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who follow in his footsteps.
