Helen R. Cherry

PORTSMOUTH – Helen Reason Cherry, 83, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. She was born on June 1, 1934 in Hamilton, NC to the late George and Gertilene Reason. Helen retired as a school bus driver for Portsmouth Public Schools; and was a member of Living Waters Christian Fellowship. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon L. Cherry, Sr.; and her brother, George Daniel Reason, Jr. and his wife Mary Alice.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Shook and husband Wayne and Melody Proffit and husband Ronnie; a son, Vernon Cherry, Jr and girlfriend Joan Fialkowski; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a host of extended family.

Helen was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Next to serving God, Helen loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed putting puzzles together and reading her bible.

A short visitation will be held at 1 PM Sunday, October 15, 2017 in Paul Funeral Home, 900 John Small Ave, Washington, NC 27889; immediately followed by a graveside service at 2 PM in Oakdale Cemetery, 180 E. 15th St, Washington, NC 27889.
