Nona's Obituary

Nona G. Szupper, 87, of Northampton, passed away on Friday, January 9th in her home. Born on August 5, 1938, in Hartford, CT, she was a daughter of the late Edmund and Julia (Krause) Leturmy. Nona and her husband, William, celebrated 26 years of marriage together. She graduated from the University of Central Connecticut and the University of Hartford earning numerous degrees in various disciplines. She was employed as a Registered Nurse working for Weustoff Hospital in Coca, FL., Children's Psychiatric Hospital in Palm Bay, FL., and numerous years in the field of Dermatology at various facilities. Nona was an active member of Queenship of Mary Catholic Church, where she proudly served as Eucharistic Minister and especially enjoyed visiting homebound parishioners in performance of that ministry. Nona also initiated the first parish nursing program at her church. She enjoyed horses, raising, training and competing at various disciplines. She assumed equestrian judging responsibilities at major competitions. She had great love and respect for all animals, especially her beloved Great Danes. Known as a “sports chick” Nona followed major sporting events from college to the “pros.” She enjoyed the excitement of college football weekends from her reserved seat at Tubby Raymond Stadium cheering on one of her favorite teams, the UD Blue Hens. Her dream job was to be offensive coordinator for the Penn State Nittany Lions. She loved golf and playing competitive rounds with her friends. Nona enjoyed a daily diet of crossword puzzles and evenings found her at her favorite pastime, reading.

Survivors: In addition to her husband, Nona is survived by her sons, Stan Nawalaniec and wife, Casandra, Peter Trantino and wife, Christine, and daughter, Susan Nawalaniec. She has been further blessed by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren (twins). Nona was predeceased by daughter, Sandi Fiorenza. 

Services: Family and friends may call on Thursday evening, January 15th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. in the Reichel Funeral Home, 326 E. 21st St., Northampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the church, 1324 Newport Ave., Northampton. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
