Norman Warner Remington, age 87 passed away peacefully at home in Frankenmuth, Michigan on July 11, 2025 from Alzheimer’s Dementia.
Norm was born in Flint, Michigan on June 3, 1938, the son of the late Warner and Leona (Neal) Remington. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary (Shriner), his daughter, Terry, his son, Richard, his grandson, Matthew (Jessica) Comben, great-grandson, Benjamin and his sister, Norma Lee Stuart.
He graduated from Davison High School in 1956. He studied for two years at Michigan State University, then transferred to Michigan Technological University and was a 1961 graduate of the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science. He began his 34-year career with the Michigan Department of Agriculture, Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division in 1963. His career with the MDA allowed Norm and family to live, explore and enjoy many locations in the state of Michigan. He began as an inspector working with a cereal leaf beetle and nursery inspection program in Three Oaks, Michigan. From 1964 to 1972 Norm was the district inspector in Escanaba responsible for all divisions, and many departmental activities in the Upper Peninsula and three northern counties in Lower Michigan. Norm became the assistant regional supervisor in Frankenmuth in 1972 where he was responsible for program activities in the thumb area until 1980. In 1980 to 1989 Norm was the programs administrator in Lansing where he was the assistant to the division director. In 1989 Norm made the choice to take a cut in pay to get a view of the bay and he and Mary moved to Traverse City. From then until his retirement in 1997, Norm was the regional manager responsible for the supervision of departmental activities in the northern 33 counties of the state. While in this position, he was the first recipient of the Michigan Department of Agriculture Commission Excellence Award in 1994. In addition to being named Mason of the Year in 2001, Norm was inducted into the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science’s Honor Academy in 2002.
Norm’s love of nature was shared with friends and family through camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing and birding. He loved the Upper Peninsula, especially “Camp Norm.” He was also an excellent tennis player. Norm enjoyed technology from the early years of the internet and shared his knowledge with his colleagues and family. He loved socializing with everyone of all ages. After retirement, Norm and Mary enjoyed traveling and spent their winters in Spring Hill, Florida but always returned to Norm’s favorite spot, Michigan for the warmer months.
Memorial Service will take place on Monday, July 28, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. at Frankenmuth United Methodist Church, 346 Vates St., Frankenmuth, Michigan. Rev. Ryan Wenburg will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Norman’s family will receive visitors at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association or Michigan Tech University.
