Not sure what to say?

Dear Gillespie Family-

I can't express how sad it makes me to read this about Pat. What a gift he was to us all. He was a dear friend of our family since college days (probably before that) and spent SO much time at the Barnetts. We loved him like family; he WAS family. He and I kept contact over the years while I was Alumni Director for O'Gorman and even after that. What I know with 100% certainty is that he loved his family MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF. I hope you all know this. ...

Patrick's Obituary

Patrick J. Gillespie, age 76, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 1, 2026, in Omaha, Nebraska, after a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. As his final gift, Patrick gave the donation of his tissues and organs.

Patrick was born on August 21, 1949, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Jeff and Marie Gillespie. He attended O'Gorman Catholic High School in Sioux Falls, Class of 1967, and went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. A lifelong learner, he later pursued additional degrees and continued education in zoology, microbiology, business administration, medical technology, and medical coding.

Proud of his Irish heritage, Patrick embodied its spirit through his warmth, humor, love of storytelling, and deep sense of connection to others.

He built a successful career in medical technology and medical coding, where his intelligence, creativity, and curiosity were widely respected. His work and interests took him across the globe, and he embraced travel and new experiences wholeheartedly.

Ultimately making his home in Omaha, Patrick lived a vibrant and full life. A natural performer, he appeared in countless theatrical productions, finding joy in creativity, community, and bringing stories to life. He was known for his immense sense of humor, zest for life, and remarkable gift for friendship. Above all, Patrick loved fully.

He is survived by his children, Sean Gillespie and Erin Gillespie-Spira, and their spouses, Johanna and Jonathan; his beloved grandchildren, Ashley, Sophia, Arabella, and Emma Jane Gillespie, and Matthew, Hannah, Owen, and Olive Spira; his brothers, Michael, Jeff, and Gregg Gillespie, and their spouses and significant others, Gracia, Rose, and David; his nephews, Brian, Mark, and Andy Gillespie; his niece, Jenny Grossman; and his niece and goddaughter, Katie Giesinger. He is also survived by many cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Patrick's legacy is one of warmth, humor, creativity, and wholehearted living. All who knew him will miss him deeply and carry his laughter and love forward.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools or to Patrick's grandchildren (c/o Sean and Erin Gillespie, 3 Courtmel Road, Mt Kisco, NY 10549)
