I will always have fond memories of Mr. Purcel. One that stands out is his guarded sense of humor, and his laughter. He also grew beautiful gardens. The taste of his cantaloupes would race me back to my childhood, and his collards and turnips were always tender and delicious. In later years it was funny to see him interact with Winston, Renee's schnauzer-it was obvious the love he had for that dog. Percel Hammonds, Sr., 90, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. He was born September 23, 1926 in Robeson County to the late James Luther & Mary Hammonds. He served honorably in the US Army during WWII. He will be remembered for his work in the community as a local roofer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: James W. Hammonds, Bobby Hammonds, James Norman Hammonds, Earl Hammonds, and Wilbert Hammonds; and two sisters: Vernie May Lowery and Hesbeth Holdaway.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Lou Godwin Hammonds of Lumberton; five children: Percell Hammonds, Jr. of Lumberton, Margaret Hammonds of Lumberton, Brenda Lucchesi of Lumberton, Judith Gail Hammonds of Pembroke, and Renee Hammonds of North Myrtle Beach, SC; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Betty Bullard of Little River, SC, Mildred Butterfield of Utah, and Irene Seldol of Fayetteville.
