On, Thursday, November 24, 2022, our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend Pernell Newby, Sr. entered eternal rest at Sentara Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk, VA. Pernell was born on January 16, 1942 to Albert Newby, Sr. and Nannie Lee Baker. He was lovingly reared in the home of his grandparents, Emily and Edgar Newby, Sr. where he diligently helped them tend the fields on the farm.
Pernell joined Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church in Elberon, Virginia at an early age and served a lifetime in this church. He served on several church ministries including the choir, usher, security and the Trustee Ministry.
In 1962, Pernell graduated from Surry County High School in Dendron, Virginia. He enjoyed high school and was a fun and loving student. After high school Pernell enlisted in the United States Marines where he served his country for six years. While serving he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal for the period of March 1964 - March 1967. Staff Sergeant Pernell Newby courageously served in the Vietnam War and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on February 13, 1970. He met the strict requirements set forth by the Congress of the United States for membership in the American Legion.
In the Surry community, Pernell was a member of the Surry County Distinguished Gentlemen Club, the Rock of Surry Elks and George H. Dabney Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed hunting with the Runnymede Hunt Club and looked forward to spending time with his fellow huntsmen. Pernell also developed a love for photography and always had one of his vintage cameras ready to snap the perfect photo.
Pernell retired from Newport News Northrop Grumman In December of 2013 after fifty-one years of dedicated service.
Pernell was a loving and devoted husband to Joyce Marie Lewis Newby for fifty-six years and to this union two bouncing baby boys were born. I was very saddened to learn of the passing of my classmate, Pernell Newby. Pernell and I were classmates from 1957 - 1962. This year we are celebrating our 60th anniversary since graduating from L P Jackson High School in Dendron, Virginia. Pernell's cheerful manner brought many smiles to our faces during our high school years. I know that his cheerfulness and willingness to be a team member contributed to his success in the Marine Corps and life after high school. To Pernell's family, please remember that I and many others care very much for you and wish you comfort and strength.

My heart was deeply saddened when I heard of the passing of Mr. Pernell Newby. I will definitely miss his laugh and our conversations we used to have whenever we’d see each other. He would always tell me that he remembered when I was a baby and how he would put diapers on me, and we would always be laughing about it. To Mrs. Marie and the family may God give you the strength and comfort you all need during this difficult time. Mr. P will definitely be missed and forever in our hearts. Lil Joe.
