Phillip's Obituary

Mr. Phillip Norman Mathis Sr. was born February 9, 1936, to Harold and Rosa Mathis. His Parents, son Phillip Jr., grandson Terence Jr., and best friend Milton Ward preceded him in death.He was born and raised in the Leeds Community where he attended Dunbar Elementary and R. T. Coles High School. Phillip accepted Christ at an early age at 35th Street Missionary Baptist church. Phillip was ordained as a Deacon and loved the Lord with all his heart. He joined the Air Force in 1954, where he was an Air Men First Class. He was united in marriage to the love of his life Gloria Roseberry in 1958, and remained faithful and true until his passing. Five children were born to this union. Tammie, Teresa, Phillip Jr, Joan, and Steven. He worked at General Motors, Allis Chamlers and Solid Waste for the City of Kansas City in which he retired from in 1993. Phillip was a Little League Baseball Coach where he took pride in teaching children how to play and win.Phillip loved his family, grandkids, and great-grandchildren very much. He also enjoyed fishing and he really loved to dance; So much that he taught all his children how to dance, specifically two step. He had many friends who love him unconditionally. He kept a smile on his face and had a laugh that was very contagious. To know him was to love him.He leaves to Cherish his memory: the love of his life and devoted wife Gloria Mathis, 3 daughters Tammie, Teresa (Terry), Joan; 1 son Steven (Monika); 11 grandchildren Jamerle, Solomon, Monic, Shawnta, Terence Jr, Lema, Phillip III, Maurice, Steven Jr., Stephan, Harold; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law who he loved dearly Audra Jackson; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. There were two that were more like brothers than cousins, Ernie and Petey Gillespie.Services for Mr. Mathis were held Thursday, July 2, 2015, at Landmark International Deliverance & Worship Center Bishop John Brown, Pastor with Rev. Arthur Mobley, Jr. officiating. Burial in Leavenworth National Cemetery.Thoughtful care and Services provided by E. S. ELEY & SONS FUNERAL CHAPEL NORTH.
