Phillip's Obituary

Phillip Mingus was born to James and Judy Mingus (Cundiff) on March 5, 1937, in Indianapolis, IN. He passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025.

Phil is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Caroline (Strouse); his sisters and brother in laws, Tina Woodall (James), Phyllis Harris (Bill); brothers and sister in laws, Edward Dean, James (Beverly), Roy (Ollie) and Bob (Jeannette) Mingus.

He is survived by his daughter, Debbie (Jeff) Maxwell and son Scott (Krista) Mingus; grandchildren, Tyler (Katie), Katie (Mitch) Paeth, Hannah (Nick) Kelly, Alisa (Jason) Lei, Nate, and Rachel as well as two great grandsons Graham and Griffin. Another grandson is due in August, and his middle name will be Phillip.

Phil graduated from Pike High School. He worked at Bridgeport Brass (Olin Brass) for 40 years as a metallurgist. After retirement he and his son, Scott, started a painting business, and he continued to paint for several years. Phillip served the Town of Brownsburg as a Police Commissioner.

Phil attended the Westside Church of the Nazarene his entire life. It was at the church that he met and married his wife Carole in 1958. Phil devotedly loved and cared for his wife until her death in 2019. As a couple they enjoyed spending time with lifelong friends, traveling and dining out. He was a steadfast servant throughout his life at Westside Church. He sang in the choir, drove the church bus, taught Sunday school, served as a church board member, worked on the sound team and was always willing to volunteer when needed. Once his health began to fail, he was still watching sermons online and faithfully supporting the church.

For many years, as his health allowed, Phil could be found at his granddaughters’ softball and basketball games, theater and choir performances and grandsons’ baseball games. His greatest joy was being with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Wednesday night family dinners were always a highlight in his week.

In past years, Phil loved driving around in his red 1996 BMW convertible and going through McDonald’s drive through for his sugar free iced vanilla coffee. His gentle spirit, quick wittedness, unexpected quips, and unceasing prayers will be missed. After 88 years of life, Phil has received from God “well done thy good and faithful servant”.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday July 19, 2025, at Westside Church of The Nazarene.  The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Entombment will be at West Ridge Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Westside Church of the Nazarene’s Teen and Children’s Ministries in memory of Phillip Mingus
