Ralph Robert "Bob"'s Obituaries

A funeral service for Ralph Robert "Bob" Betts, Jr. 86 of Newark will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the Newark Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.Born April 19, 1927 in Batesville, Ohio to the late Ralph R. and Lucille A. (Allison) Betts; he served during World War II in the U.S. Navy, as a Machinist's Mate 3C on a Destroyer. In the course of his service he visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki a month after the atomic bomb. He was a 1945 graduate of Barnesville High School and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD where he played football.Throughout his career Bob worked for Betts Buick in Barnesville, he was the General Manager for Avis Rental at Walker & Battat Ford for 27 years, and he owned Betts Enterprise (CarsPlus) in Heath. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Jaycees, and Newark Rotary.Bob enjoyed anything to do with the Civil War, jewelry making, traveling, building his many collections, computers, and spending time with his family.Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Jeannine (Slettebak) Betts, whom he married January 15, 1949; Sons, Steven Betts of Columbus; Jim (Peg) Betts of Granville; a daughter, Debby (Jack) Pryor of Newark; Grandchildren, Stephanie (Todd) Grubbs, Rachel (Bill) Purcell, Dawn Deming, Jennifer (Walter) Hickman, and Carri Pryor; Great grandchildren, McKenzie & Delaney Grubbs, Lindsay, Riley & Will Purcell, and Lucas Hickman.Friends and family may visit two hours prior to the service, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at VENSIL & CHUTE FUNERAL HOME, 1850 W. Main Street, Newark.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio or the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
