On August 21, 1937, Earnest (Earnie) was born to Fred and Viola Mae Remedies in Elizabeth, Louisiana. He attended Elizabeth High School and graduated in May 1955. During high school, Earnie was a member of the band, played baseball and ran track.
He married Wanda Bohanon on September 4, 1959. Earnie and Wanda have three beautiful girls: Carol, Kathi, and Karen. They have four grandchildren: Andy, Toni, Ryan, and Jessica, and two great-grandchildren: Taylor and Morgan.
In December 1955, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at a variety of places here in the United States, including Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, Fort Gordon, Georgia, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Fort Lewis, Washington, and Hawaii. He has served in Germany, Vietnam, and South Korea. Luckily for us, he kept returning to Ft. Hood. After 21 years of service, on May 1, 1976, while stationed at Ft. Hood, Earnie retired from the army as a First Sergeant. While serving his country he received the Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Silver Service Star; Republic Of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster; Meritorious Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea); Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/Palm; Good Conduct Medal, Clasp, Bronze, 5 Loops and Sharpshooter (Rifle).
Fortunately for us and the City of Copperas Cove, Earnie and Wanda decided to make this their home. After retirement, Earnest went into the insurance field and owned an insurance agency for 20 years. He may have retired from the armed services, but he was not through serving. Earnie served as president of the Central Texas Prevention of Child Abuse Center for two years. He served the City of Copperas Cove as Director of the Fire and Police Commission and as a member of the police chief’s advisory committee.
Always ready to volunteer in the community, Earnie joined the Exchange Club of Copperas Cove in March 1978. He was elected and served as Treasurer of the club for years. He also served as a Director, President-Elect, and President of the club. He served as Xhairman of the Exchange Sunshine Home Corporation for 4 years and Vice-Chairman for two. Earnie had more to give, so he became involved with Exchange on the district and national levels. He served the Texas District as Awards Chair, District Secretary, District Director, District President-Elect, and District President, and on the national level as the Volunteer Field Representative of the National Exchange Club. Throughout the years he earned the Exchangite of the Quarter, Outstanding Club Treasurer Award, Outstanding District Director, District Exchangite and the New Club Building Award. For his service to Copperas Cove and the Exchange Club on the local, district, and national level, Earnie was presented with the Golden Deeds Award for 2013. Earnie also earned an inclusion in the Who’s Who of Executives and Businessmen-2002 Edition, and the Hill Country Community Action Center Volunteer Award.
Earnie was steadfast in his belief in democracy and continued to serve during election season as well. If you wanted to vote, you could always find Earnie ready to help.
Earnie dearly loved his fellow man and dedicated his life to serving others.
