Rev. Del Parkerson moved home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. He was born in Dodge County, Georgia on September 27, 1931, the oldest of three sons of Matthew Eugene and Clyde Lee Parkerson. He was predeceased by his parents, youngest brother, Carroll Parkerson of Fayetteville, NC, his wife Jessie Lord Parkerson, and by infant twin sons, Lyn and Glen.Del was ordained to the Christian ministry by his home church in Chester Georgia in 1949. He married Jessie Lord on August 18, 1951, a member of his first congregation. He graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia in 1952 with a B.A; Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC in 1956 with a Master’s of Divinity, and TH. M in 1957. He was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree by Campbell University in 1991. In 2012, the North Carolina Baptist State Convention awarded him a Baptist Heritage medal of Honor.He devoted 70 years of his life serving as pastor of six churches, one in Georgia, and five in North Carolina, the last of which was the First Baptist Church in Sanford, NC. Following retirement on September 30, 1996, he served ten churches as interim pastor. His last interim pastorate was the Temple Baptist Church in Wilmington, a church he had earlier serve as pastor from 1969-1981. Following that interim period the church elected him Pastor Emeritus.He was active in the life and ministry of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, serving for two years as Convention First Vice-President (1978-79, 1979-80). On other occasions he served as member of two NCBSC committees: the Budget Committee and the Program Committee. He served as Chairman of the Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute Board of Directors. He also served as Chairman of the Biblical Recorder Board of Directors. He wrote the Biblical Recorder Sunday School lesson commentary for 24 years. He began writing the weekly newspaper article known as The Paper Pulpit in 1958 and this continued until 2023. He was a member of the Campbell University Board of Ministers. Thoroughly enjoying what God called him to do, he sought to be faithful to the end of his life, greatly rejoicing in the truth found in Psalm 116:15…”Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.”Del is survived by his daughter Gail Herring and husband Chip Herring of Wilmington; by grandson Joshua Herring and his wife Amy, and their 3 children Kai, Hallie, and Rebecca of Wilmington; by brother Ed Parkerson, and wife Phyllis of Greensboro, NC; sister-in-law Angie Parkerson of Fayetteville, NC, and by several nieces and nephews in South Carolina, and Georgia.A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Temple Baptist Church on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Visitation will be at 1:00 in the Sanctuary, followed by the funeral at 2:00. Conducting the service will be a close family friend, Kelly Stanley, pastor of Southside Baptist church in Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to Temple Baptist church in Wilmington, OR, Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington at lifecare.orgThe family would like to thank the nurses at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the tender loving care they gave to Del in his final 5 days. We could not have written a better end of life experience, as it was exactly what Del wanted. We especially want to thank Nancy Russell, the nurse that was with us the last 2 days, and at beside with us when Del took his final breath.
