A celebration of life service for Reverend Walter F. Goynes, will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at New Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 2511 E Columbus Drive, Tampa, Florida with Rev. Larry L. Roundtree II, Officiating. Interment will be held at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
Reverend Walter F. Goynes, Sr. of Tampa, Florida was born on March 4, 1929, in Enterprise, Alabama to the late Walker Goynes and Janie Warren Goynes. He was called home November 12, 2024, to join his parents, Walker and Janie Goynes, his brother Louie Frank Goynes, and 5 sisters; including Cassie Smith, Willia Reese, Hassie Carter, Fannie Mullins, Essie Green, Edna Johnson, Viola Grayer, as well as his son Walter Frank Goynes Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Johanna L. Goynes, and four children Vincent Goynes (Okheyla), Aminta Goynes, Evadne Goynes and Quentin Goynes as well as four grandchildren: Darion Goynes, Deontaye Kirkland, Jonias McCrimmon, and Anya Williams. He is survived by his sister, Marthangle Cole. He leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Reverend Walter Goynes was raised in a Christian home where he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized. He attended Coffee County Schools and achieved his higher educational endeavors at Selma University and Alabama State University, earning his baccalaureate degree and Master of Divinity. Frank Goynes was a larger-than-life figure whose influence spanned across congregations, educational institutions, and communities. His profound impact as a pastor, educator, counselor, and community leader has inspired many.
As a pastor and testament to his faith and leadership, Reverend Goynes nurtured and guided the Growth of both established churches and those he founded, providing visionary leadership. He fostered community engagement and empowered others to serve resulting in thriving congregations. Reverend Goynes helped establish and was an instructor at the Baptist Seminary in Tampa, FL. He was a member of the Ministerial Alliance, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and NAACP and served on numerous other committees and organizations. Reverend Walter Goynes also walked with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma supporting the equal rights movement. His legacy of service and transformation left an indelible mark on the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Reverend Walter Frank Goynes’ life was a living testament to his faith and belief in the power of service. He leaves behind a legacy of empowerment, hope, and unyielding love. There will be a viewing at Wilson Funeral Home, 3000 N. 29th Street, Tampa, Florida from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m.
