Rev. Robert's Obituary

Reverend Robert Allan White was born on June 24, 1937 to James Andrew White and Sallie Woodson White.  He was called home by his heavenly Father on Friday, September 26, 2025.

Reverend White was preceded in death by his parents, James Andrew White and Sallie Woodson White, sisters Doris White and Helen Postell Outling, brothers Alvin White and James Harold White, granddaughter Bianca Flynt and great-granddaughter Amiyah Canty. He was formerly married to Shirley Canty White who also preceded him in death.

Left to rejoice in his home going are Sons, David A. White (Vanessa), John E. Canty and Charles G. Canty (Adetutu), nine grandchildren, Tahia Gwathney, Terrell Simmons, Denean White, Kristina Peterson,  Ashley Canty, Christopher Canty, Tomilade Canty and Aliyah Canty, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Rev. White was a graduate of Lucy Addison High School, class of 1955. He attended and received an Associates Degree from Bronx Community College, Bronx, N.Y., and a Bachelor of Science   Degree from Mercy College in New York. He received certificates and academic awards from New York Telephone Company schools.  He retired from NYNEX (Verizon) after 29 years of loyal service as a Quality Control Manager.

He was the first African American Salesman in Roanoke, Virginia of a non-African American business, Northwest Hardware Company. He also was the first African American Assistant Manager in Roanoke, Virginia while working at Builders Mart.

Rev. White served as Pastor and Pastor Emeritus of Grace Community Church in Salem, Virginia. Rev. Robert Allan White of Roanoke, VA passed away September 26, 2025. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, 11:00AM at Serenity (126 Gilmer Ave location). The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to service.
