Reverend Charles Edward Gaines, Sr. of 3240 Commodore Drive, Macon, Georgia died Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Navicent Health in Macon, Georgia.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 12, 2020 at 12:00 Noon in the sanctuary of the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church in Cordele, Georgia. The burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery in Cordele, Georgia.
Charles Edward Gaines, Sr. was born in Cordele, Georgia on September 21,1938.
He attended Gillespie-Selden High School in Cordele.
After leaving high school he moved to Macon, Ga and worked several jobs around the city.
In the late 1950’s he was ordained as a Baptist minister. Over the years he ministered at various churches throughout middle Georgia.
In 1961 he started working with the Atlanta Gas & Light Company in Macon. That same year he married Mattie Pearl (Robinson) Gaines. They had two sons Charles Edward Gaines, Jr. and Harold Bernard Gaines.
He worked with the gas company for 36 years before retiring in 1997. During those 36 years he also became known around town as reliable landscaper and handyman. Upon his retirement he purchased a green and white Ford Ranger truck. He used this truck to carry his tools to various painting, landscaping and odd jobs around Macon. He continued driving his prized Ford Ranger until his health prevented him from driving in 2018.
Reverend Gaines was a member of the Freemason Victory Lodge #482.
On Thursday, March 5, 2020 he answered the call of Christ to come home. He leaves many memories to his beloved and caring sons, Mr. Charles Edward Gaines, Jr. and his wife, Mrs. Diane Gaines of Alpharetta, Georgia and Mr. Harold Bernard Gaines of Macon, Georgia; his caring granddaughter, Miss Allyson V. Gaines of Alpharetta, Georgia; his loving sister, Mrs. Dorothy Williams of Cordele, Georgia; his beloved brothers, Mr. Samuel Gaines, Jr. of Albany, Georgia, Mr. James Gaines and Mr. Harry Gaines both of Cordele, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends, including his devoted friends, Mr. Clarence Hill, Ms. Kathy Hill and Mr. Paul Dean.
