Not sure what to say?

I am so grateful that I was able to make the trip to Newport Vermont (thanks Mom!) to say goodbye and spend precious time with family.
He was such a unique and sweet soul and so beloved.
Some favorite memories of him: He took me camping and we made up silly games like trying to knock over dead trees with our butts. He would take me to the beach, we would get soaked for the ride home and all the way home we would have the windows open and see who had the most drops of water left on...

My condolences go out to the Blais family . Rick was a great classmate and teammate during our days at Sacred Heart. I am not surprised to read about his impact in the community as a teacher, coach, and friend to many. I wish that our paths would have crossed over the years, you will be missed.

I will miss seeing Richard mowing your property and stopping by with Wrinkles and Pheobe. Thank you for the visits.

I had the pleasure of coaching Ricky in soccer and basketball during his time at Sacred Heart; he was a total team player, gifted athlete and joy to coach. He clearly led a wonderful life of giving. Love you, Ricky, Coach

I am deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Richard Blais. I will always remember our time together at NCUJHS. I have many fond memories. I will cherish our time officiting Junior High soccer, having you refereeing my basketball games, and helping me get the softball and baseball fields ready for game day. To the family, please accept my deepest and most heartfelt condolences at this most challenging time.

I was shocked to learn of Ricky's sudden passing...doesn't seem possible. I knew him as a fellow teacher, and of course anything related to soccer : a long time men's League summer soccer teammate, summer youth league board member and of course our fixture as the Junior Division Director for our NVSS soccer camp ... no one but Ricky could get 1st and 2nd graders to stay focused on soccer for two hours each day while having fun! He shared his gift as a teacher and a person every hour of...

My Condolences to Rick’s family.
The news hit many of us as a surprise. A fit, active man, how was this possible. He stayed busy, from family and friends to keeping busy with sports. Rick was the figure that you look forward to passing you by, stopping to have a quick chat and get back into the sport. He was a helpful, friendly person. Rick will be missed especially when we are watching the kids sports. Maybe the wind will blow during the games and maybe that wind might be Rick passing...

Rick was one of many first cousins that I had. We did not do much in the early years. But when I got in to my twenties was hired at Sacred Heart to coach. He was at Charleston at the time. We set up a jr high soccer tournament in the fall. He was also your son soccer coach in 7&8 grade.
He was great with the every kid.
He was always the best dressed and cheapest. Thanks to his yard sales . Due to his mom.

Mr Blais was my science & math teacher for 7th & 8th grade at Charleston Elementary School 1989-1991. Also my soccer coach in 8th grade. He was also my mathletes coach in 8th grade. I remember how happy he was when him n Nancy were expecting Tyler. I don't think I've EVER seen a man sooo happy in my life. I can see why they were best friends. I was recently thinking about Mr blais. N I even dreamed I was back in school n woke UP VERY CONFUSED that morning lol . I am saddened to hear of...

Obituary

Richard's Obituary

Richard Leo Blais

Richard, 67, died suddenly in his home on May 30, 2025.  He was born January 28, 1958 in Newport, Vermont.

Richard dedicated over 30 years to teaching Math and Science at Charleston Elementary and North Country Junior High School. He took great joy in educating generations of students and later, their children. Rick was a Division I soccer player at the University of Vermont, a testament to his lifelong dedication to athletics. His passion for sports, especially soccer, continued well beyond his college years. A devoted advocate for youth athletics, Rick became a cornerstone of the Northeast Kingdom soccer community, inspiring countless young players through his support, mentorship, and unwavering enthusiasm. Whether he was coaching, lining fields, refereeing, or cheering from the sidelines, Rick could always be found on the soccer field.  In retirement, Rick found deep joy in life’s simple pleasures. He cherished his long daily walks with his son and best friend, Tyler, and treasured time spent with his close friend Brian, especially playing  “the music game”. He enjoyed exploring the outdoors, and hikes up Mt. Pisgah. He remained active, engaged, and ever-playful with his grandchildren, whether catching crawfish at Lake Willoughby or kicking around a soccer ball, he treasured every moment spent with them.

Rick was a truly selfless person who never hesitated to help others, regardless of the time or personal cost. His kindness knew no bounds, he extended the same unwavering support and generosity to strangers as he did to his own children. Rick found true purpose in helping others, always offering his time, and his heart without judgment or reservation. He will be remembered for his giving spirit and the quiet, steadfast love he showed to everyone around him.

He was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Lucienne (Fortin) Blais, and his brother, Marc. He is survived by his children: Rebecca Striker (Todd), Katie Choquette (Nick Kyratzis), and Tyler Blais (Amanda Amyot). From his marriage to Nancy Butler, Rick was blessed with six grandchildren; Aaron, Kamden, and Ella Striker; Logan and Olivia Choquette; and a new grandchild on the way.

He is survived by his siblings: Rachel Rollins (James), Diane Malvar, Lisa Johansen (Chris), and Lawrence Blais (Linda), as well as many nieces and nephews who will always remember his quick wit and unforgettable storytelling.

Rick also leaves behind his beloved chihuahuas, Wrinkles and Phoebe, who were constant companions. Rick had a deep love for rescue animals, especially chihuahuas, and made it his mission to give them safe, loving homes. Over the years, he rescued four dogs from across the country, each one a testament to his compassion and commitment to animal welfare. His dedication to giving these animals a second chance was one of the many ways he quietly made the world a kinder place.

Rick was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Calling hours will be held at Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport, Vermont, on Sunday June 8, 2025 from 3:00-6:00pm.
