Richard's Obituary

Richard Kenneth Byrd lived a life dedicated to education, faith, and family. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and educator, Dick’s legacy of kindness and learning touched countless lives. One of four children born to his parents, William Howard and Rachel Dye Byrd, Dick grew up in Chattanooga, TN alongside his brother, Bill, and his sisters, Katherine and Jeannette. He graduated from Lincoln Memorial University and moved to Hampton, Virgina, to begin his career as a school teacher. With a passion for education, he later earned his PhD at Old Dominion University and continued in service as an elementary administrator in Hampton City Schools.

A man of deep Christian faith, Dick was an active member of Trinity Methodist Church and Smithfield Christian Church where he shared his gift of teaching in Sunday School. He was also a devoted member of the Gideons International, where he spread his faith through service.

In his personal life, Dick enjoyed sailing and fishing in the Chesapeake Bay area. He also loved raising, training, and riding horses, his hobby inspired by the many television Westerns he enjoyed through the years. Of his passions, he loved being with his family. Dick is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Byrd; his sister, Jeannette Palmer (John); his two children, Jennifer Leigh White and Richard Kilgore Byrd (Carey); and his four grandchildren, Nicholas (Sydney), Jack, Madeline, and Harrison.

Dick passed away on August 12, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, learning, and faith. The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support. We also extend heartfelt gratitude to the amazing “angels on earth” at Commonwealth Senior Living and Amedisys Hospice.

A private graveside service was held for the family.
