We send prayers to his family in this time of great loss. He was a sweet man that loved his family very much. We are blessed to be raising our son in the same house his family was raised. His smile was warm and his kindness was admirable. We want his children to know they are always welcome to stop by their childhood home on Golfside Lane.

Rick this is Doug Bridges in Eugene Oregon. Rick Johns told me about your dad and I'm so sorry to hear that he died. Rely on the strength from your family and friends to help you navigate this time. Richard was my supervisor at the Highlands News Sun for 3 years. He taught me a lot about sales, and was always so up-beat every day on the job. I miss him a lot and think of him often. He truly cared about us on the sales team, and he loved the newspaper business. The world is a lot dimmer without Richard Hitt.

I first met Richard and Ruth as avid fans for Sebring High School as I was Assistant Principal and also umpired baseball games for the local high school, as well as the Community College. You could always hear Ruth's voice from the crowd. After the game she would let me know about some things I missed during the game, but in a nice way. It was nice to have the support of the Hitt family (wifes and grandchildren) for the games! My prayers go with the family at this time.

I am so thankful that Uncle Dick got to come to San Antonio in the past several years to spend time with us and his brother. He was a hilarious man and seeing my dad and his brother together was so heartwarming. We shared many laughs playing cards and talking. I have to say our best memory was taking him to ACL to see Paul McCartney. He had a blast and we were able to share a wonderful day with him. A memory that I will have forever. Will miss you and your great smile, Uncle Dick! Love...

Richard C. Hitt, went to be with this Lord on March 26, 2020. He was born on July 2, 1941 in Lynchburg, Virginia to Richard C. Hitt Sr and Joyce E. Hitt. Richard went into the Air Force in 1960 and was honorably discharged in September 1963. He was stationed in Mississippi, California and Alaska. He and his wife Ruth were married in Bradenton, Florida in 1963. He is preceded by his wife Ruth of 54 years and survived by 3 sons- Rick (Jayma) of Sebring; Harold (Ginny) of Oviedo, FL; Scott (Gina) of Sebring; 4 granddaughters, Sydney, Cassady, Olivia and Anderson; 2 grandsons, Jake and Dalton; brother, James (Helen) of San Antonio, Texas and many friends and colleagues. Richard spent 45 years in the newspaper business and was publisher of the News-Sun from 1976-1986, as well as other weekly and daily newspapers in the Central Florida area. He was past president of the Florida Press Association, as well as past president of Sebring Chamber of Commerce and the Sebring and Okeechobee rotary clubs. He was active in Dixie Youth Baseball coaching for 5 years in Sebring, also coaching basketball for several years. He and wife Ruth were avid Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans through good and bad years, and always enjoyed going to the games. He and wife Ruth were avid Sebring Blue Streak and SFSC panther fans, as well. A golfer, though he never claimed to be any good at it. He really loved playing in 4-man scrambles with his 3 sons. It was “hit” the ball and drag dad. His main passion was his family, Ruth, his sons and his terrific daughters-in-law and grandchildren. They were the joy of his life. The days at the beach each July with his family were a special time, being with the ones that he loved. The family thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers at this time.
Come and join the family for a Celebration of Life on Saturday August 15, 2020, visitation 11am to 12pm and service to immediately follow.
