As Dick was such a soft spoken and unassuming individual we never knew of his impressive list of life accomplishments. He will be remembered as a patient listener who was fully present in any conversation. Dick was frequently welcoming and quietly encouraging unsure newcomers to our square dance class at Heel and Toe. Richard Alfred Mattson, 80 of Merrimack, NH died Thursday July 31, 2025 after a sudden illness.
He was born in Webster, Ma on March 15, 1945 a son of Hilding and Nellie (Noles) Mattson.
Richard grew up in Worcester, Ma and went on to Clark University where he received a Bachelors of Art Degree. He then enlisted in the US Naval Academy at 22. He valued the service highly and attained the rank of Lieutenant. As part of this service, he served as a Communications Officer. After leaving the Navy, he went on to work in private industry and returned to school to receive a masters Degree in Business Administration from Clark University. Then in 1974 he began his civil service career by enrolling in an 18 month financial management training program where he rotated through several financial training positions and began his career as a Financial Specialist. He quickly became the Deputy Chief Financial Officer. He worked alongside and provided direct support to Brigadier Generals, Bell, Buck Winter and Cardile. He retired in June 2001 with over 30 years of distinguished federal service.
Richard is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jeannie Mattson, a daughter Sylvie Raymond; a daughter in-law, Sandy Raymond; three grandsons, Eric Favreau and his wife Teresa, and their three children, Brody, Maddox and Lunda; David Morris and his two children Devin and Samantha; and Jacob Raymond and his son Marcel; a granddaughter, Miranda Raymond; a brother Francis Mattson and his wife Fran and their Lynn-Marie Tervo, Leigh Moore and James and Peter Mattson; eight great-grandsons; two great-grandnieces and one great-great nephew.
Calling hours will be held in the Rivet Funeral Home, 425 Daniel Webster Hwy, Merrimack, NH on Thursday Aug. 7, 2025 from 4-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Church, 16 Baboosic Lake Rd, Merrimack on Friday at 10 AM. A Graveside service will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1326 Main St., Holden, MA.
