Richard Carl "Dick" Smith, 78, passed away on February 22, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Born on January 31, 1947, in Pontiac, Michigan, Dick dedicated his life to service—both to his country and his faith. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served in Vietnam as a criminal investigator and was honored with the Bronze Star for his dedication and bravery. Following his military service, he built a distinguished career with the U.S. Immigration Service, ultimately serving as the District Director of the United Immigration Service in Seattle, Washington.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dick was a man of deep faith and unwavering commitment to helping others. He devoted much of his life to serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many prominent positions within the church and served as a temple shift coordinator. His missionary work took him across the world—Salt Lake City, Utah; Tallahassee, Florida; Oakland, California; New Zealand; Samoa; and Australia—where he shared his testimony and supported countless individuals in their spiritual journeys. His generosity extended beyond his own service; he actively sponsored missionaries in the field and found great joy in mentoring youth and offering guidance to those in need.
Dick was a devoted family man who cherished time spent with loved ones. He is survived by his sister Linda Hansen; wife, Miriam Smith; daughters Rebecca Brown (Nathan) and Renee Deuel (Jeff); foster daughter Debbie Devine (Bruce); nine grandchildren—Trevor, Robert Dean, Rachel, Abigail, Joshua, Jack, Shelby, and Jordan; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores Jean Smith; father Frank Smith; mother June Smith; son Shaun Smith; daughter Leilani Smith; and granddaughter Christina June.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the LDS Stake Center located at 13768 S 6400 W in Herriman, Utah. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:00 PM at Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park in Bluffdale (Gravesite B3 190).
