Not sure what to say?

We are so sorry to hear about Dicks passing. We have such sweet memories of our many long walks with you while serving together in Aucklund New Zealand. You exemplified love and joy in your life together! It was always fun to be around our dear friends Dick and Miriam. We are currently serving a mission in Amman Jordan. We would love to have you visit us here Miriam! Thomas and Sheilah Weir

Elder Smith, a man of great faith and desire to serve God. I had the honour of working alongside you and Sister Miriam Smith as you both served in the Pacific Area as senior couple missionaries, in the humanitarian department. We had a lot of fun, and great memories together. I wish I had picked up that last phone call when you called me all the way from Utah. I miss you brother! Sending love to you too Sister Smith during this time. Til we meet again Elder Smith, alofa tele mo oe uso.

I'm sorry for the families loss. Richard Smith had the gift of getting people to see life's events in a different perspective. Giving them peace. He had a warm heart and a good sense of humor. He will be missed. Love and prayers for Miriam and family.

Deepest condolences at your loss. We remember with fondness our times together in Auckland. Still have memories of our dinner with you and Weirs! God bless and keep you! Steve and Kristi Smith

Richard's Obituary

Richard Carl "Dick" Smith, 78, passed away on February 22, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Born on January 31, 1947, in Pontiac, Michigan, Dick dedicated his life to service—both to his country and his faith. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served in Vietnam as a criminal investigator and was honored with the Bronze Star for his dedication and bravery. Following his military service, he built a distinguished career with the U.S. Immigration Service, ultimately serving as the District Director of the United Immigration Service in Seattle, Washington.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dick was a man of deep faith and unwavering commitment to helping others. He devoted much of his life to serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many prominent positions within the church and served as a temple shift coordinator. His missionary work took him across the world—Salt Lake City, Utah; Tallahassee, Florida; Oakland, California; New Zealand; Samoa; and Australia—where he shared his testimony and supported countless individuals in their spiritual journeys. His generosity extended beyond his own service; he actively sponsored missionaries in the field and found great joy in mentoring youth and offering guidance to those in need.

Dick was a devoted family man who cherished time spent with loved ones. He is survived by his sister Linda Hansen; wife, Miriam Smith; daughters Rebecca Brown (Nathan) and Renee Deuel (Jeff); foster daughter Debbie Devine (Bruce); nine grandchildren—Trevor, Robert Dean, Rachel, Abigail, Joshua, Jack, Shelby, and Jordan; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores Jean Smith; father Frank Smith; mother June Smith; son Shaun Smith; daughter Leilani Smith; and granddaughter Christina June.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the LDS Stake Center located at 13768 S 6400 W in Herriman, Utah. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:00 PM at Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park in Bluffdale (Gravesite B3 190).

Dick’s legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
