Obituary

Richard's Obituary

Richard U. “Dick” Ulmen, Watertown, passed away Wednesday, July 3rd at Samaritan Keep Nursing Home. He was 89 yeard old.

Born in Watertown September 06, 1934, Richard was a son to John H. and Margaret (Mooney) Ulmen. Following his education in Watertown Richard joined the United States Navy in 1954, serving on the USS Fiske DDR842. In 1956 he ended his active-duty service and would transition to the Naval Reserves where he ultimately attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4.

Dick followed his grandfather and uncles in the brick laying and masonry trade working construction for Wager Brothers and at Benson Mines before employment at St. Regis Paper Co. (later Champion International) where he would work until retirement.

In October of 1955 Dick married Sally A. Delaney at St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown. Following retirement, the couple wintered in Florida and spent their summers at their cottage on Flanders Rd. in Three Mile Bay. The couple moved back to Watertown in 2017.

Dick was an avid reader, and nothing pleased him more than spending an afternoon with a good book under his willow tree. Dick also enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and most of all his grandchildren.

Surviving besides his wife, Sally, are his 5 children, Michael (Jacalyn), Judy (Steven) Smith, Susan (Bruce) Finkbeiner, Richard (Alice) and John (Jennifer); and his siblings, Patrick, Peter, Bernard and Carl. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren.

Besides his parents Dick is predeceased by an infant brother and sister, James and Peggy, his beloved sister, Mary Katherine Pike, and sister in-laws Shirley & Nancy.

The funeral mass will be at St. Patricks Church Friday, July 12 at 10:30am. Burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive guests prior to the mass beginning at 9:30am.
