Not sure what to say?

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. We were good friends in high school and we used to chat car to car when I worked at MLPD. My condolences to his wife and family.

This is such sad news for such a wonderful human being. Haven’t seen him in so many years, however tempering how he was always so kind. Big hugs and prayers to all those close to him.

What a tragic time for the Lake family, my thoughts are with you.

My thoughts are with you Kelly. I pray for your family in this difficult time.

Kathy, Myself and our two daughters, Tami and Elizabeth, sending our condolences to Rick’s family. At this time of grieving, we are so proud of Rick’s life and his will be a pleasant memory for us.

RICK's Obituary

Rick Lake, 56, Barnum, died suddenly on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at his home from a heart attack.

Rick was born on October 28, 1968 in Moose Lake to Leverne and Shirley “Tinny” Lake. He grew up in Moose Lake and enjoyed camping and fishing with his family. He liked hockey and would often flood the backyard as a young boy for a place to skate. Rick attended Moose Lake High School, graduating in 1987. He later attained a degree in Law Enforcement from Hibbing Community College. On August 17, 1996, Rick married Kelly Pollard in Cloquet, MN. Rick worked for the Rush City Police Department before establishing his career with the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, beginning in the summer of 1989. He began working as a Boat and Water Safety deputy and on December 24, 1990, Rick started as a patrol deputy sheriff for Carlton County. In 1997, Rick was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and then Lieutenant in 2004. He was a field training officer for new deputies, served on the East Central Drug Task Force and spent many years as an investigator. On June 12, 2019 after serving his community for 30 years, Rick retired from the Sheriff’s Office. He was extremely committed to his career in law enforcement and was proud to have served in the area where he grew up. Rick loved hunting, fishing, and taking care of the animals at home on the farm, but his true passion was being involved with his kids. He was so proud of them and followed them in every activity they were involved in, including hockey, football and baseball. He also coached his kids in hockey and baseball. One of Rick's true joys was watching Taylor ride her horse. He liked being outdoors as much as he could, especially at the Kettle River farm, and spending time with his dogs.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents: Leverne and Shirley “Tinny” Lake; and brother: Todd Lake. Rick is survived by his wife: Kelly; four children: Hunter, Brendan, Landen and Taylor; four siblings: Susan (Mark) Opdahl, Vicki (Greg) Gamst, Tom (Kathy) Lake, and Lisa (Scott) Drewlo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
