Robert "Bob" Kerr Howie, Jr., 77, of Decatur, IL, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Hickory Point Christian Village.Bob was born in Chicago on December 9, 1939 to Rachel May (Cartwright) and Robert K. Howie, Sr. Bob got his Eagle Scout designation when he was 12 years old. This was unheard of at the time. He was an active Boy Scout in his early years. He graduated with an Engineering Degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Bob then served in the Marine Corps Reserves from September of 1962 - July of 1967. He was discharged in June of 1968 with the rank of Lance Corporal (E-3). He was employed as an Engineer until his retirement. Bob was a proud American, passionate designer, avid pilot and had many hobbies and interests. He married Di Anne "Dee" Olivia DeMent on December 29, 1966. She preceded him in death on June 28, 2014.Surviving him are his daughters: Elizabeth (Ryan) Brimm of Forsyth, IL and Rachel Louise Howie, grandchildren: Jade, Gage and Kiarra Brimm of Forsyth, IL, sister: Susan May (Kirk) Evans of Marco Island, Florida, nieces: Jennifer Huenemeier (James Mueller) of Houston, Texas and Kristen (Trent) Thompson Decatur, IL, great nieces: Hadley Mueller of Houston, Texas, Sophia and Alyssa Thompson of Decatur, IL, Cousins: James (Mary Ann) Howie, Jr, John (Jan) Howie and Barbara (Clayton) Campbell. He is also survived by his two beloved dogs, Tink and Sadie.He was preceded in death by his parents, May and Robert K. Howie, Sr, uncles, Lloyd and Louise Howie, Jr., Bub and Marian Howie, James and Ginny Howie, Sr., George Cartwright, Lester Cartwright, aunt, Ruth Billingsley, his wife, Di Anne, two granddaughters, Brandy Kay and Katana Sierra Brimm, brother-in-law and good friend Ray Huenemeier.The family would like to thank the staff at St. Mary's Emergency Department, the ICU nurses, sixth floor nurses and staff, Decatur Ambulance Service, Hickory Point Christian Village nurses and staff, Safe Haven Hospice, as well as the chaplains and pastors who assisted. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Ronald McDonald house or the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.Per Bob's wishes, he will be cremated with a private memorial service to be held at a later date.
